Description

L. MOOD Seeding Machine.
Patented Nov. 24,1868.
'finit ml saw gaunt (tit LYNFRED MO'OD, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO TlTUS AND BOSTWIQK, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 84,296, dated November 24, 1868.
IMPROVED/ EMT IN SEEDING-MACHINES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
sown, the box contracting towards the bottom to fit the sowing-device, which I make of three parts: first, a hinged leaf, second, a horizontal-sliding bar, and third, a perpendicular-sliding bar, inclinedmore or less,'to fit'the sides of. the box; and .I move the sliding bars in opposite directions by a double crank, or
other equivalent device, connected with one or both wheels; wd from the two sliding bars I project two sets .of teeth or agitators, theone from the lower or outside bar, and the other from the upper bar, the one keeping the throat clear, and the other feeding the article sown to the throat of the box.
In fig. l, A is the box holding the seed; and B B, the wheels, axle, thills, and other parts of the carriage; and G, the double crank, moved by the gearing attached to the wheels; and D, the rod connecting the upper crank with the lower sliding bar; and E, the rod connecting the lower crank to the upper sliding bar; and F is the row of teeth in the throat of the machine; and G,'the teeth or agitators in the cavity of the seedbox, on andmoved by the upper or side bar H, the teeth F being moved by the lower bar I; and J is the hinged leaf, having the fixing-lever K, held by the screw and burr of the clamp L; and the ends of the leaf are acted on by the springs M; and the metallic ends N and frame-pieces 0 complete the seed-box.
In fig. 2, the same letters show the same parts, the lower bar I, and the leaf J, springs M, ends of box N, frame-pieces O, gearing, double cranks, O, and middle bars P and P, connecting-rods D E, and other paIts being-more clearly seen.
' It will be noticed that by the setting of the cranks,
one on each side of the centre of the uppergear-Wheel, the two bars H and I move in opposite directions, thus giving great action to the broadcast sowing. Also that the springs M hold the ends of the hinged leaf in closer contact with the bar H, than in the middle by the lever and clamp. This is for the purpose of obviating the usual more rapid sowing by the more direct jar of the wheels at the ends of the box.
The advantages and uses of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it-appcrtains.
1. The arrangement and construction of the bars 1? P fast to a cross-bar, anterior of and extending to the rear of the carriage-axle, but are not fixed to it, for the purpose of obviating the jar of the seed-box A by the carnage-wheels, as set forth.
2. Moving the sliding bars H and I in opposite directions at the same time, when made and used substantially as described, thereby giving great motion to the sowing-bars, as set forth.
3. The arrangement of the double crank, C, over and transverse to the centre of its motion, for the purpose of moving the slidihg bars H and I in opposite directions, as set forth.
4. Attaching theagitators GU10 the bar H, when said bar H is used for the twofold purpose of agitating the grain, &c., and for forming part of the throat, as set forth.
. 5. The arrangement of the hinged leaf J, so as by the described means to regulate the throat made by the leaf and the sliding bar H, as described.
6. The construction and use of the lever K and itsset-screw clamp, for the purpose of setting the throat by the leaf J, as set forth.
7. The arrangement, on the ends of the leaf J, of one or more springs M, for the purpose of evening the sowing, as set forth.
8. The combined Whole, made and arranged of the carriage B, theseed-box A, bars H and I, and double crank, O, substantially as descrided.
. LYNFRED M001).
