PAUL FREDERICK RICHTER, oFcIL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA. f
POCKET WRITING-CASL lSpecification yof Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
.and State of Pennsylvania, 'have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in the `following is a` specification. 4
This 'invention relates to an improved pocket writing-case subservingy all of the functions of .a writing-tablet, and at the same time being constructed in such a manner and of such dimensionsthat the same constitutes a handy writing case or holderk which can be conveniently carried around inl the pocket of a merchant,` salesman, or, any other person who has occasion to frequently use a-writing-tablet for the purpose of mal;- ing orders, memoranda, or other data. g
To this end the invention provides asimple and practical construction ofv Writingcase 'capable of being -carried in the pocket while at the same time embodying in it convenient means for writing' upon sheets of' paper and also for guiding the sheets in such positions that any of the same can be readily brought to view for reference purposes.
With these and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and
claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in the construction for carrying out the objects above indicated are necessarily susceptible to structural modification without departing from the yscope of the invention, but a preferred embodiment thereof is shown in `the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of apocket writing-case embodying the present invention and showing the rest-lid partly drawn out to leave a comparatively wide writing-opening through which the uppermost sheet of the tablet is exposed for writing. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the case, illustrating the method employed for removing the uppermost sheet of paper. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the manner of handling a sheet for positioning the same behind the tablet or stackA or for removing it from said L Like references designate corresponding parts In the several figures of the drawings.l In carrying out the present invention the improved writing-case essentially consists of.
an oblong narrow tablet-box, vdesignated in ,its entirety bythe numeral 1 and preferably.
constructed of such dimensions as to be conveniently carried in the pocketlof va merchant or salesman or `any one re uiring the frequent use of, a writing-tablet. lowever, this box may be constructed of anyA suitable 'size or 4dimensions andmay be made of wood,
leather,- veneer, tin, cardboard, or any other.
suitable or desirable material, yet -in all embodiments of the invention the tablet-box is formed with the closed side and end walls 2 and 3 and with a box back wall or bottom 4 constituting what may be properly termed a back support, and having the side and end walls 2 and 3 united to the edges thereof in any suitable manner.
` The plain box formation com rising the connected bottomv 4 and the si e and end walls 2 and Sprovides within the box-body a single oblong' paper-holding compartment 5,
which is designed to accommodate therein a stack or tablet of paper sheets 6, the uppermost of which is exposed through the front writing-opening 7, arranged beyond the inner edge portion 8 of an adjustable and detachable-rest lid 9, arranged to cover and uncover the open front side of the box-body.
The adjustable and detachable rest-lid 9 presents a perfectly flat top surface, and the side edges of said lid are provided with slidetongues 10, which slidably engage the guide grooves 11, provided in the inner sides of the opposite side walls 2 ofthe box. At its outer edge the sliding lid 9 is provided with a stopcleat 12, which seats itself in the rabbet or seat 1,3, provided in one end of side walls 2. This cleat limits the inner movement of the lid, while at the same time not interfering with the outward movement of the latter to entirely uncover the paper-compartmentv 5 or to provide for varying the area of the writing-opening 7. In any position on the boxbody the lid constitutes a flat restfor the hand and also may be used as a sheet support or backing should it be desired to place a single leaf on the outside of the box for purposes of writing thereon.
At the end of the box-body having the writing-opening 7 therein there is arranged within such body a transverse guiding-strip 13a, arranged substantially parallel to the IIO l adjacent end walls 3 and of less width than the side walls 2, so that its inner edge terminates short of the iixed back 4 of the boxbody, leaving an intervening opening y14 lying contiguous to the back 4 and in communication with the transversely-arranged paper guide slit 15, formed between the strip 13a and the adjacent end wall 3, the latter end wall being provided at its inner side with an inwardly-deflected guiding-bevel 16, lying o pposite the corresponding beveled portion 17 of the strip 13a.
The box-back 4 of the box-body is provided therein opposite the writing-opening 7 with an elongated manipulatingslot 18, through which is introduced a iinger, and a backing-sheet 19 is preferably arranged in the bottom of the boX'beneath the stack or tablet of the paper sheets '6.
To dispose of the uppermost sheet written upon, it is simply necessary to press the finger vthrough the slot 18 to carry the uppermost sheet out through the opening 7, where it can readily be grasped and removed by the fingers. lAfter this is done the invention provides for placing this sheet beneath or behind the stack or tablet. This is accomplished by vpressing lightly through the slot 18 against the stack or tablet and inserting one end of the written sheet through the slit 15, whereupon the guiding-bevels 16 and 17 will carry the same to a position beneath the stack or tablet. The finger, slightly dampened," if necessary, c'an then be used to slide the written sheet completely beneath the tablet. For pur oses of reference the sheet at the bottom o the tablet can be removed by reversing this operation, or by pressing the end of the tablet through the o y ening 7 any sheet desired may be removed or reference.
I claim- 1. A Writing-case comprising a boX having a front writing-opening, a back manipulatingslot and a aper-guide arranged to guide a sheet to and) from the bottom of the box-body.
2. A writing-case of the class described comprising a boX having a iront writing-opening, a back manipulating-slot, and at one end a transverse guiding-strip spaced from the adjacent end wall and from the back of the box-body to 'form a paper guide slit.
3. A writing-case of the class described comprising a boX having a iront sliding lid shorter in length than the box-body to iorm la fron-t writing-opening, said box-body being further provided in its back with a manipulating-slot, and at one end with a transversely-arranged paper-guide having guidingbevels and an opening lying next to the back or base of the boX.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL FREDERICK RICHTER.
