CHARLES RICHARD WILLIAMS, OF MoCOMAS, WEST VIRGINIA.
' RETURN SHIPPING-TAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 7, 1 906.
Application filed September 21 1905. Serial No. 279,526.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RIcHAR WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at McComas, in the county of Mercer and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Return Shipping-Tag, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shipping-tags such as are employed upon crates, boxes, barrels, and other holders which are designed to be re turned to the shipper or consignor when empty.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply-constructed and thoroughly efficient novel form of tag which will in a ready and practical manner exhibit the name both of the consignor and consignee and in which by the removal of a portion of the tag the directions which initially indicated that the holder was from a consignor to a consignee will indicate that the holder is from a consignee to a consignor, thereby rendering unnecessary the attachment of separate tags for the shipment and reshipment of the holder and further reducing liability of loss of the holder to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view,
as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a shipping-tag, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a tag as it appears upon a going holder. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the tag as it appears on a re turn-holder. Fig. 3 is a view in plan of the tag spread out flat.
' The device embodies a main tag 10 and a supplemental tag 11, the latter being connected with the former by weakened lines 12, 15, and 16 to permit separation from the main tag when desired. The tag may be made of any suitable material, preferably of heavy'paper, such as is generally employed in connection with devices of this character.
The main tag is divided into two fields 13 and 14, on the first of which appears the name and address of the consignee of the holder and on the second of which the name and addresss of the consignor. Upon the and From on the supplemental tag are the reverse of the like words on the main tag, so that when a portion of the supplemental ta is removed, as shown in Fig. 2, the holder wil be directed from the consignee to the consignor, whereas when the supplemental tag is intact and positioned as shown in Fig. 1 the holder willbe directed from the consignor to the consignee. As clearly shown, the weakened lines 15 and 16 are inset some distance from the ends of the supplemental tag, thereby affording space to receive fastening devices 1.7, by which the tag as a whole is secured to the holder, similar fasteners being employed at the opposite ends of the tag, as
clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that when a tag is afiixed to a holder by the consignor no additional tag will have to be supplied by the consignee in returning the holder, as it will only be necessary to detach the supplemental tag in order to reverse the directions.
I claim- An article of the class described comprising a main and a supplemental tag, the former being adapted to contain the names of the consignor and consignee and the printed legend To opposite the consignors name and the printed legend From opposite the consignees name, and the supplemental tag being foldable over the main tag and having weakened lines near each end thereof that extend longitudinally of the tag, and bearing the legend To opposite the consignees name and the legend From opposite the consignors name.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES RICHARD WILLIAMS.
