useful Improvements in Golf-Clubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

The present invention relates to improvements generally in golf-clubs; and the pres- ;ent invention has for its principal object to provide a simple and easil constructed striking face or plate for a stri 'n implement for players of golf and other simi or sports or games, such striking face or plate having eat resiliency and spring-like action that the ball when struck will be sent with greater force than is now ordinarily thecase.

A further object of this invention is to provide, in connection with a player's implement for strikinga ball or the like, a ad or cushion of a flexible and preferably a, astic material which is arranged substantia ly back of the striking-plate of the implement, the face of said late preferably being of the same size as the ace of the cushion and capable of moving back into its normal initial position flush 'tiltil the main face of the striking-head of the c u e Other objects of this invention will be clearly evident cm the following detailed description of the same. With the various objects of my invention in view the same consists in the novel construction of golf-clubs, as hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the general arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim. i

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1, and 2 show an edge and face view, res ectively, of a strikinghead or body of a golf-club, the same being provided with one form of striking face and plate embed 'ng the principles of my present invention. lg. 3 is horizontalsection of same, said section being taken on line 3 3 in said Fig.2; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 4 4 in Fig. 1 of the drawin s. in the construction represented in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the striking end or head 1 is made in its striking-face with a depression or recessed portion 3, in which is arranged a pad or cushion 4, referably of a soft and flexible material, suc r as rubber or the like. Ar ranged upon this pad or cushion 4 and within the remaining part of said depression or recessed ortion 3, with the outer face 6 normally ush with the. said striking-face of the head or end 1 of the golf-club, is a plate 5,

preferably of metal, said plate having resili-' ent properties and being capable of a slight movement toward the cushion 4 when struck and the said plate 5 serving as the strikingface of the head or end 1 of the golf-club for striking a ball and driving the same and the face of said late 5 being preferably of the same size as t e face of the cushion and moving back into its normal initial position flush with the face of the head of the club immediately after impact with a ball. That the said striking face or plate 5 may besuitably held in its operative position'npon the pad or cushion 4 and still be capable of slight movement, due to the resilient nature of the j late when striking a ball, the saidplate or face 5 is made of slightly less length than the longitudinal across the said recess or depression 3 between the parts 7 and of the end or head 1 of the club, as indicated in Fig.

2 of the drawings, the said plate or face 5 being made in its marginal edges 12 with countersunk receiving portions 11, which register with correspcndingly-placed countersunk-receiving poi 1S 10 in the marginal edges 3 of the said 8, substantially as ICC illustrated, thus providing depressions or recesses for the heads 14 of screws 13, which are screwed into the main body of the head or end 1, as clearly illustrated, and thereby secure the said face or plate 5 and the pad or cushion 4 in their operative positions within the said recess or depression 3. It will thus be clearly evident that when a ballis struck with the said face or plate 5 the sudden impact produces a movement of the plate 5 toward the pad or cushion 4, which suddenly becomes compressed and the parts instantaneously resuming their normal initial positions, due to the vibratory and spring-like action of the parts, the ball will be driven a greater distance than is ordinarily the case with the usual construction of golf-club.

The simplicity of construction and the many advantages obtained of a striking implement for players of golf, when madein the manner of my present invention are clearly evident from the foregoing description and from an inspection of the accompanying drawings. 1 am aware that changes may be made in the arran ements and combinations of the parts wit out departing from the scope of my present invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, nor do I confine myself to the exact detai s of the construction of the said parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A golf-club comprising a head or body havin a laterally-extending opening in the front face of said body, a flexible cushion or pad in saidopening, a striking-plate of substantially the same size of said opening placed in said opening and arranged over sald cushion or pad, said plate having its lower marginal edge flush with the lower face of said head or body, and said plate moving inwardly when struck and assuming its normal initial position flush with the frontface of said head or body immediately after impact with a ball, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A golf-club, com risin a body having an o ening extending atera y across the entire .ace of said body, a flexible cushion or pad in said opening, a separable plate of substantially the same size as said opening placed in said opening and arranged over said cushion or ad, and means for securing said plate and said cushion or pad in position,

4. A golf-club comprising a head )or body having an opening extending laterally across the entire face of said body, the face of said head or body aiso having countersunk receiving portions in the marginal edges of the respective parts which are conti 'uous to the edge portions of said opening, a exible cush ion in said opening,a plate of substantially the same size as said 0 ening placed in said opening and arranged a ove the said cushion and between the marginal edges of'saidparts which are contiguous to the edge portions of said opening, said plate having countersunk receiving portions in its marg nal edges registering with the countersun receiving :portions in the marginal edges of said parts, and

screws provided with heads for fastening said cushion and plate in position, the heads of said screws being arrangedin the counter sunk receiving portions, and said screws having their screw ends screwed into the said head or body, said platemoving inwardly when struck and assuming its normal initial position flush with the face of said body immediately after impact with a ball, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
