Letters Patent No. 81,204, elated August y18, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-LOCKS.
@tigt rlgrhnle referat tu in lgese ttters iitmt mit making wat nf tlg smut.
To ALL WH0-MIT M AY coNcEnN;
Be it known that I, O. S. PEASE, of Xenia, in the county of Greene, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents the lock with the guard removed from the key-hole.
Figure 2 exhibits the lock with the guard over the key-hole.
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the lock with the cartridges in position.
l The'nature of this invention consists in arranging a common padlock, used for stables and other out-houses,- in such a' manner that additional safety may be derived from it,`by bolting and securing the escutcheon withV cartridges, so that, in order to disengage'the escutcheon-elasp from the lock, it will be necessary to explode the f cartridges, and thus give warning of burglarious attempts.
Arepresents a padlock, of common construction in its interior. B designates an escutcheon or guard, secured to the' lock in the ordinary-way. The said guard will project beyond the lower circumference of the lock, and is furnished with a shoulder at its under side, adapted to the shape of the 'casing of said lock. The projecting end of guard B has an elevation, C, with a hole through it, designed to contain a cartridge.
S representan pin, inserted in the face of the lock A. Against said pin, the guard will rest when in position over the key-hole.
d represents a projection, extending from the lower cndiof lock A, and corresponding in shape with the lower end of guard B. The projection d hasA a perforation corresponding with the hole in guard B.
In operating my lock, a cartridge, c, will be inserted ih the holes through guard B and projection d. A lead filling will now be placed over the'outer end of each cartridge, and compressed hy the use of a pair of pliers, such as described and set forth in my application filed for a similar invention, on the fourteenth of the present month. By this operation', the clasp D will be secured in its position, so that it will be impossible to disengage it without exploding the cartridges, by means ofl a sufficient pressure to ignite the cartridges by the'usc of thc pliers above mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, whnt claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Pat-ent, is-
The esoutcheon or guard B, in combination with lock A, when both are so constructed and arranged that they can be bolted together with cartridges, employed substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
` I O. S. PEASE.
Witnesses:
T. H. ALEXANDER, '.Jxo. A. ELLis.
