SUGAR-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Appli ation fil d April 17, 1905. Serial No. 6,007.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO B. BARTH. a citizen of the United States, residing at Loveland, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sugar-Machines and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My'invention relates to improvements in machines for making sugar; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a sugar-machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the bottom plate, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the revoluble valve-plate.
The cylindrical box or drum 1 is divided by a horizontally-disposed partition 2 into an upper compartment 3 and a lower compartment 4. The said box or drum has a concentrically-disposed inner cylindrical perforated wall 5, which extends longitudinally therethrough. Vacuum-pipes 6 lead from the compartments 3 '4 of the box or drum to a suitable receiving-tank, which is not here shown. A plate 7 forms the bottom of the box or drum and is provided on one side with eccentricallydisposed openings 8. A blue-water pipe 9 extends through an opening in the center of the bottom plate and is provided with a packing-gland 10.
Within the center of the box or drum is a revoluble perforated tube 11, which is provided on its outer side with a spirally-disposed blade or wing 12, which extends from the upper to the lower end thereof and the outer edge of which bears against the inner side of the cylindrical inner wall 5.
A circular valve-plate 13 bears and is revoluble on the bottom plate 7 and serves to center the perforated tube 11 and to space it from the cylindrical wall 5. Said valveplate has openings 14 to register with the openings 8 of the bottom plate and has on its upper side, at a point opposite said openings, a lug 15, which is engaged by-the lower end of the spiral blade or wing, so that the valve-plate is caused to revolve with the perforated tube 11. The latter has a horizontal partition 16, which divides it into an upper compartment 17 and alower compartment 18.
The top plate 19 is steam-tight and is provided with an opening for the reception of a syrup-spout 20, which discharges on the spiral blade or wing in the space between the perforated wall 5 and the perforated tube 11. A steam-pipe 21 discharges into the upper compartment of the perforated tube 11. Said tube is connected to a bevel-gear 22, which is engaged by a similar gear 23 on a driveshaft, whereby the perforated. tube 11, together with the spiral blade or wing which it carries and the valve-plate, maybe rotated.
In the operation of the machine the material fed theretois worked downwardly by the revolving spiral wing or blade which serves to scrape the inner side of the perforated wall 5. The syrup passes through said wall into the drum or box and is carried off by the vacuum-pipes. The sugar is discharged by the valve-plate which is rotated by the spiral wing or blade as the openings come into register with those of the bottom plate. The sugar as thus discharged from the box or drum by said valve-plate drops into a compartment under the said box or drum, which compartment is formed by a basin 25, which is secured to the lower end of the box or drum, is here shown as of truncated inverted conical form and is provided withdownwardly-opening valves 26, which are hinged, as at 27, and are supported normally in closed position by means of springs 28. In the bottom of the basin or chamber 25 is a stufiing-box 29, through which the pipes 9 extend.
The spring-closed valves in the bottom of the basin or compartment 25 open from time to time as the sugar accumulates in the said basin or compartment to automatically discharge the same.
The steam-pipe enables steam to be introduced into the upper compartment of the perforated tube. The pipe 9 enables blue water to be introduced into the lower compartment of the perforated tube;
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inven tion will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
IIO
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A machine of the class described, comprising a drum having a cylindrical perforated inner wall, divided into an upper and a lower compartment and provided with vacuum pipes communicating with said compartments; a revoluble tubular perforated member in said drum, having an upper and a lower compartment and a screw-wing, the latter coacting with the inner wall of the drum, means to introduce steam and blue water respectively into the upper and lower compartments of the revoluble perforated tubular element, and means to discharge the sugar from the space between said perforated element and the perforated inner wall of the drum.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of a drum having an upper and a lower compartment and a perforated cylindrical inner wall, vacuum-pipes leading from the said compartments of the drum, a revoluble tubular perforated element in said drum, divided into upper and lower compartments and having a screw-wing to scrape the perforated inner wall of the drum, means to introduce steam and blue water respectively into the upper and lower compartments of said revoluble perforated element, and a revoluble valve in the bottom of the said drum in the space between said revoluble perforated element and the perforated inner wall of the drum, substantially as described.
3. A machine of the class described comprising a drum having a cylindrical perforated inner wall, divided into an upper and a lower compartment, and provided with vacuumpipes communicating with said compartments; a revoluble tubular perforated member in said drum, having an upper and a lower compartment and a screw-wing, the latter coacting with the inner wall of the drum, means to introduce steam and blue water, respectively, into the upper and lower compartments of the revoluble perforated tubular element, means to discharge the sugar from the space between the said perforated element and the perforated inner wall of the drum, a compartment below the drum to receive the sugar discharged from the said space, and means to discharge sugar from said compartment.
4. A machine of the class described comprising a drum having a cylindrical perforated inner wall, divided into an upper and a lower compartment, and provided with vacuum-pipes communicating with said compartments, a revoluble tubular perforated member in said drum, having an upper and a lower compartment and a screw-wing, the latter coacting with the inner wall of the drum, means to introduce steam and blue water, respectively, into the upper and lower compartments of the revoluble perforated tubular element, means to discharge the sugar from the space between the said perforated element and the perforated inner wall of the drum, a compartment below the drum to receive the sugar discharged from the said space, and means to automatically discharge sugar from the said compartment.
5. A machine of the class described comprising a drum having a cylindrical perforated inner wall, divided into an upper and a lower compartment, and provided with vacuum pipes communicating with said compartments; a revoluble tubular perforated member in said drum, having an upper and a lower compartment and a screw-wing, the latter coacting with the inner wall of the drum, means to introduce steam and blue water, respectively, into the upper and lower compartments of the revoluble perforated tubular element, means to discharge the sugar from the space between the said perforated element and the perforated inner wall of the drum, a compartment below the drum to receive the sugar discharged from the said space, and spring-closed valves to automatically discharge sugar from said compartment.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
