BEVERAGE-KEG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 5, 1905.
Application filed August 9, 1904. Serial No. 220,120.
To 7/ whom, it 71mg concern.-
Be it known that 1, Leo Bi-xnoon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beverage-Kegs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a portable beverage-keg provided with a cooling-chamber and a gas-chamber filled with carbonic-acid gas and a beverage-receptacle, the instrumentalities beingso constructed that as the l.)everage is siphoned from the receptacle the remaining fluid within the receptacle may be kept in an effervescent condition as well as be continuously under a charge of carbonic-acid gas drawn from the gas-chamber, and my invention embodies certain other instrumentalities, as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 a sectional view of a beveragekeg embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 shows a detail of the valve.
In the accompanying-d rawings I have shown a keg A of any suitable construction and adapted to receive a charged beverage, such as beer or ale, and this keg is provided with a bottom a and the top 6. Held within the keg A at a suitable point is a threaded collar 21, provided with the plug 22, so that this keg may be filled with cracked ice through this collar-provided filling-opening. closed by the plug 20, as shown. Held within the keg is a. drum of any suitable material, such as sheet metal, to provide a gas-chamber, as shown. said drum forming a gas-tight union with the top 6 and the bottom mas shown. H eld within this gas-chamber is a second sheetmetal drum forming the beverage-receptacle D, formed by means of the drum 1?, said drum forming a liquid-tight union with the keg bottom a and top 7/, as shown.
The barrel-top is provided with a suitable opening into which is threaded the stem 19 of a suitable valved siphon comprising the tube 1, entering the neck 2, provided with the head 3. within which operates a valve 5, provided with the handle 1, and into this head 3 extends the spout 6.
Entering the barrel-top 7) at a suitable point is a safety-valve comprising the housing 11, within which is held the valve 10, provided with the stem 9 and head 8, an interposed spring 7 closing the valve in forcing the piston 1O downward. Should the gas-pressure within the chamber C become too great, the same will find an escape and vent through the safety-valve.
Entering the gas-chamber C is an intakepipe 16, provided with a resilient normally closed valve 18 and the threaded stem 17, upon 1 which is screwed a suitable supply-pipe through which the carbonic-acid gas is forced into the chamber 0. The valve 18 is normally closed to prevent the escape of the gas This valve 18 is cone-shaped and has a central perforation 18, which enlarges outward. The gas being forced into the chamber readily distends the resilient valve to escape through the opening; The gas under pressure within the chamber, however, exerting a pressure upon the pliable cone portion of the valve forces the same together to close the escapeopening.
Extending from the beverage-chamber D into the gas-chamber C is the tube 15, provided with the housing 11, holding the controlling-valve 13, having the operating-stem 12, so that the valve 13 may be carried up into the chamber 11 to permit the escape of the carbonic-acid gas under pressure within the chamber U to find an escape into the beverage-chamber 1).
These kegs and barrels are especially adapted to contain beer, ale, and other charged beverages for family use and are also especially adapted to be used for picnic and excursion purposes. T hese kegs and barrels are made of various sizes, and the cooling-chamber B is filled with cracked ice to keep the gaschamber cool, and this chamber being a bad conductor has a tendency of keeping the beverage within the receptacle D cool and palatable.
In order to lill the beverage-holding receptacle l), the valve 13 is first closed to prevent any escape of gas from the gas-chamber C. An elastic tube in connection with a suitable reservoir is then drawn over the spout 6, when the valve Eb is opened to permit the entry of the liquid into the bevcrage-receptacle D.
After the keg is lilled the valve a is closed,
when communication is restored between the gas-chamber C and the beverage-chamber D.
\Vhen the beverage is to be used, the operator simply turns the valve 4: to permit the escape of this fluid. As soon as it is found that the beverage does not siphon sufliciently the screw 12 is operated to actuate the valve 13 to permit the escape of a certain amount of gas from the chamber G into the beveragereceptacle, insuring the beverage effervescing and finding a proper eXit.
Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
The combination With a suitable keg, provided With a threaded filling-opening, of a threaded plug Within said filling-opening, a sheet-metal drum Within said keg, forming a gas-tight union With the top and bottom of said keg, said drum providing a gas-chamber Within said keg, the space between said keg- Walls and drum forming a cooling-chamber,
a second drum Within said first-mentioned drum forming a gas-tight union With the top and bottom of said keg, said drum providing acentrally-disposed beverage-chamber, a tube entering said beverage-chamber through the top of said keg, a valve secured to said tube, a spout extending from said valve, an intakepipe entering said gas-chamber,a normally closed resilient valve Within said intake-pipe, a tube extending from said gas-chamber into said beverage-chamber, and a stem-provided controllingvalve Within said tube, all arranged substantially as set forth.
