SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,587, dated September 20, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, VALENTINE KLING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Council Blufis, in the county of Pottawattamic and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Book Finishers Stand, of which the following-is a full, clear, and exact I description. I

This invention relates to improvements in stands for holding books while finishingthat is, lettering or ornamenting the back and sides of the cover.

In finishing books on the back it is the usual practice to place the book in a clamp to hold it firmly; but as the book must be turned many times in order to do the work on either side of the hubs it is necessary to open the clamp and manually turn the book and again place it in the clamp.

To obviate this tiresome and unnecessary work is an object of my present invention, by means of which a book may be readily turned as desired without taking it out of the clam until the book is entirely finished.

A further object is to so arrange the stand that while finishing the sides the book may be turned as desired Without handling.

I will describe a book-finishers stand embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bookfinishers stand embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a clamp employed. Fig.4 is an elevation showing the device as arranged for finishing the sides of books, and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are perspective views of parts thereof.

The standard of the device comprises telescopic members 1 2, the member 2 being movable in the tubular member 1. The said tubular member 1 is provided at one side with a vertical slot 3,-through which apin 4., attached to the member 2, passes, the outer end of said pin 4: being threaded and engaged by a set nut 5, which obviously holds the member 2 in its adjusted position with relation to the member 1. The slot 3, it will be noted, opens outward at the top, so that the two parts may be readily separated when desired.

On the upper end of the standard member 2 is a table 6, on which is removably mounted a turn-table "(I At its center the turn-table has a post 8 for engaging in the tubular upper end of the standard section or member 2, and near its ends the table 6 is provided with rollers 9, on which the turn-table rests, and is prevented from tilting endwise or laterally when parallel with the table 6, and theroller also facilitates slight turning of the turntable. The clamp'consists of side members 10 11, and these clamp members are designed to slide on the turn-table toward and fromv each other. For causing these movements I employ a screw-shaft 12, having right and left hand threads engaging in threaded lugs 13-1 1, extended downward from the center of the clamp members and into a boxing 15, formed in the turn-table, the side walls of this boxing obviously forming guides to keep the parts 10 11 in parallelism. The ends of the screw-shaft extend through openings in the end Walls of the boxing 15, and the ends are provided with drop-handles 16.

For large books I employ extension members 17 18 for the clamp. These members are provided with pins 19, arranged to slide in eyes 20 on the members 10 11, and they are held as adjusted up and down with relation to the lower members 10 11 by means of set-bolts 21. It may be here stated that the inner sides of the clamp members will be provided with a lining of soft material, so as to prevent any damage to the book.

At the under side of the turn-table at each end is a rib 22, provided with a notch 23 to receive the upper end of a gravity-latch 24, pivoted to the table 6, so as to lock the turntable rigidly in alinement with the table 6.

In the operation the table may be adjusted to the desired height, and then by placing a book on the turn-table between the clamp members the said members may be pressed tightly against the book by manipulating the screw-shaft 12. The finisher may stand at one side of the device, and when it is desired to turn the work, say, to a reverse position to that shown in Fig. 1 it is only necessary to release the gravity-latch 24 from the notch, then turnthe book and turn-table, and when the turn-table has reached its reverse position the latch will fall into the notch at that end. It will be noted that the ribs 22 are curved so as to form cam-surfaces to automatically move the latch outward until the central position is reached, when the latch falls into the notch.

The arrangement above described, it is obvious, is for holding a book while finishing the back. I will now describe the means for holding a book while finishing the sides and in which the clamping device is removed.

Referring to Figs. 4 to 7, 25 indicates a circular plate forming a track for a turn-table 26. This-circular plate is provided at its opposite sides with cross-cleats 27,'which rest upon the table 6 and support the upper surface of the plate 25 suflicientlyabove the rollers 9 to permit the turn-table to clear the same. The plate 25 is secured to the table 6 by means of bolts 27 passing through openings in' the table 6 and engaged by thumbnuts 28. The under side of the turn-table 26 'is provided at its center with a lug 29 for engaging in a socket member 30 in the upper side of the plate 25, and this turn-table is provided with ball-casters 31, which engage upon the plate 25.

In the use of this device the book is to be placed upon the turn-table, which is covered with a suitable soft material to prevent damage to the book, and then the table may be turned as desired and the work proceeds.

After finishing one side of the book it is turned over and the other side finished.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A book finishers stand comprising a standard, a table secured to the upper end thereof, a turn-table mounted to turn on the first-named table, the said turn-table having a boxing at its center, clamping members having threaded lugs extended into said boxing, a screw-shaft having bearings in the end walls of said boxing, the said shaft having right and left hand threads for engaging with corresponding threads on said lugs and drop-handles on the two ends of said shaft,

2. A book-finishers stand, comprising a standard, a table on the upper end thereof, a

turn-table mounted to rotate on the first-named table, rollers supported by the first-named table and with which the turn-table engages, clamping members carried on the turn-table, a screw-shaft for moving said members toward and from each other, and adjustable extensions for said clamping members, the inner surfaces of said extensions being on the inner plane of the clamp members.

3. A book finishers stand comprising a standard, a table on the upper end thereof, a

turn-table mounted on said first-named table,

curved ribs on the opposite ends of said turntable, at the under side the said ribs being provided with central notches, a gravity-latch pivoted to the first-named table for engaging in either one of said notches,and a book-clamping mechanism carried by the turn-table.
