STAKE-POCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,673, dated August 2, 1904,

Be it known that I, MICHAEL SHIELDS CUR- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at (irulfport, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stake-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
Th is invention has relation to stake-pockets; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a stake-pocket adapted to be used on flat-cars, the said pocket having four upright walls which are adapted to hold the stake in place, and the back wall of which is adapted to prevent the stake from damaging the side sill of the car-floor. The pocket is also provided at its upper rear edge with a flange that extends over the top of the sill, said flange being provided with a downwardly extending lug, which passes along the rear side of the sill. A bolt passes vertically through said flange and the sill. The said lug prevents the sill from splitting. The lower end of the pocket is held in place by a U-bolt, which passes around the said pocket and extends through the sill and secured at its inner ends in the usual manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the sill, showing the stake-pocket attached thereto. Fig.
2 is a transverse sectional view of the sill and stake-pocket.
The stake-pocket is preferably made of one casting or forging and consists of the ordinary vertical walls and the back verticalwall 1, which at its lower end extends down below the lower ends of the other three remaining walls. The three outer walls are surrounded by the headings 2 2, which are located near the upper and lower ends thereof. The flange 3 extends horizontally back from the upper rear edge of the pocket and passes over the top of the sill 4. The rear face of the wall 1 bears against the outer face of the sill 4. The vertical bolt 5 passes through the flange 3 and the sill I. The rear edge of the flange 3 is provided with the downwardly-extending lug 6, which passes behind the inner face of the sill at. end of the pocket and its ends extend hori- Zontally through the sill 4.
By providing the pocket with the side 1 it will be observed that the stake 8 does not come in contact with the sill 4, and consequently that the said sill is protected from any lateral strain that is exerted upon the said stake; also, the flange 3 and the lug 6 surround the upper edge of the sill and prevents the same from splitting.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stake-pocket adapted to be attached to a sill, said pocket having a flange adapted to pass over the edge of the sill, said flange having a lug adapted to pass behind the sill.
