TELESCOPIC GRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,144, dated July 5, 1904.

To al whom it may concern- Be it known that I, FRANK H. McGowAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescopic Grips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Heretofore the construction of telescopic grips was made for the express purpose of accommodating a larger or smaller quantity of impedimenta and keeping the same in a tightly-packed condition.
The object of my invention is to provide a telescopic grip which will overcome some of the difliculties and inconveniences experienced by the use of such a grip and which will likewise dispense with the necessity of straps for holding the two sections together. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter described in the specification and illustrated in the drawings and as more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a telescopic grip embodying my improvements, showing the cover thereof raised. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower section of the grip separated from the upper. Fig. 4 is 'a front and side view of the male member of the device for locking the sections of the grip together. Fig. 5 is a front and side view of the female member of said looking device. Fig. 6 is a plan view of said female member. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail section of the male and female members, showing the manner of locking the same together.
In the drawings, A represents the lower section of a telescopic grip, which is constructed in substantially every respect similar to the corresponding section of telescopic grips now in common use. The upper section B of the grip that which is intended to be telescopically fitted over section Aconsists of the four vertical side walls and has hinged to the outer edges of preferably, one of its longitudinal walls a cover C. If desired, the downwardflanged edges of the cover may fit or lap over the outer edges of the section B, as shown in Fig. .2, instead of closing thereupon edge to edge, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In this latter event the cover would be locked to section B by a suitable trunk-lock a and side catches b b of any desirable construction.
Sections A and B are locked together by means that avoid the necessity of straps. These means comprise a male member or bolt D and a female member or socket E. I prefer to use four sets of these devices and secure two of said sets to the front wall of the grip and two to the rear wall. When this is done, the rear bolts D are secured at their upper end to and extend forward slightly from the hinged supporting-plates c c of the hinge of the cover 0 (which is secured to the inner surface of the rear wall of the upper section B) and then extend downward parallel to said wall inside of and past the upper edge of the lower section A of the grip into the sockets E, which, as shown, are secured in vertical alinement therewith to the inner surface of the side wall of the same. These sockets E each consists of a channeled piece of metal I of suitable dimensions that have their concaved sides faced to the Wall and have their flanged edges placed fiat against the same and secured thereto by rivets or other means. The pendent portion of bolts D are provided with a longitudinally-arranged series of holes g g therethrough, and the upper ends of the sockets into which they enter are provided in their raised or convex sides with a transverse hole d therethrough to permit of the passage into the channel of the socket of a transverse pin 6. This pin is secured to and carried by the upper free end of a verticallydisposed leaf-spring f, the lower end of which is suitably secured to the convex surface of the socket E in such manner as to keep said pin normally pressing into hole (I. Pin a is, preferably, cylindrical throughout its entirety, and when it is desired to move it out of engagement with bolt D it can be done by grasping the upper end of spring f and pulling it outward. As there are several sets of these locking devices'employed in each grip, it would be inconvenient, if not impossible, for one person to hold all the springs fthereof so that the pins 0, carried thereby, would be out of engagement with bolts D at the same time. .I therefore secure the lower ends of springs a to sockets E in such manner that they can be swung or moved as on a pivot, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the drawings, to prevent the pins engaging the bolts until the sections of the grip have beenadjusted as desired. If desired, the upper side of the extremity of the pins may be beveled, as shown in dotted line in Fig.7 of the drawings, so that when the grip is packed and the cover closed and the contents of the grip are compressed by forcibly pushing the two sections together bolts Das they are moved into the sockets would engage the beveled end of the pin and force it outward. The pin during such movement of the bolt would engage each hole therein scrim 11111., but would prevent the consequent separation of the sections until the springs were manipulated, as hereinbefore explained, to move them (the pins) out of engagement with the bolts.
The two sets of the locking devices secured to the front walls of the sections of the grip are preferably located opposite those hereinbefore described as secured to the rear walls thereof, and their construction is also the same, with the single exception that the upper ends of bolts D are secured to and depend from suitable screw-plates it, that are suitably fastened to the inner surface of the upper portion of the front walls of said grip, substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be understood that said locking devices may be located as desired, and it will also be understood that two or more of them can be used in conjunction with a grip constructed substantially as described, according as desired.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A telescopic grip comprising two sections one of which is provided with a cover; and a lockingdevice consisting of a male and female part respectively secured to the inner surfaces of the side walls of said sections, said male locking part provided with a hinged supporting-plate.
2-. A telescopic grip comprising two sections, one of which is provided with a cover;
and a locking device consisting of a verticallydepending male member having a hinged supporting-plate secured to the inner surface of one section; an alining female member, into which said male member enters, secured to the other section; and spring-actuated means for temporarily retaining said members together.
3. A telescopic grip comprising two sections, one of which is provided with a cover; and a locking device comprising a verticallydepending male member having a hinged supporting-plate secured to one section and pro vided with a longitudinally-arranged series of holes; a female member secured to the inner surface of the other section in alinementwith said. male member; and a spring-actuated pin engaging the male member, said spring being pivotally attached to the female member.
4. A telescopic grip comprising two sections, one of which is provided with a cover;
and means for locking the sections together comprising a bolt having a hinged supportingplate secured to and depending vertically from one of said sections and provided with a 1011- gitudinally-arranged series of holes, a socket secured in alinement therewith having a hole near its mouth, a pin extending through said hole and engaging said bolt, and aspring from the upper end of which said pin projects, and which is pivotally secured to said socket near its lower end.
5. In a telescopic grip means for locking the two sections thereof together, comprising a bolt secured to and dependingvertically from one of said sections and provided with a longitudinallyarrangcd series of holes, a socket secured in alinement therewith having a hole near its mouth, a pin extending through said hole and engaging said bolt, and a spring from the upper end of which said pin projects, and which is pivotally secured to said socket near its lower end.
