Description

l @uiten NORMAN MAXHAM, or HANCOCK, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR To HiMssLr AND c. e. ROB-BINS, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 74,841,'catcol February 25, 186,8.
IMPROVBMENTIN HUB AND AxLE.
TQALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN: y
.Be it known that I, NORMAN MAXIIAM, of Hancock, inthe county of Addison, and State of'Vermont, have invented a new and improvedv Sand-Head; and I do hereby `declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing apparatus for preventing sand'or dirt i from workinginto and injuring' the boxes or axles of carriages. It consists offa sand-head attached tothe hub,
revolving with said hub around the axle, withinA a cover or box attached to the axle, said cover being lprovided on theunder side of the same with a nick or notch through which sand or dirt caught by the sand-head will fall to the ground. In the accompanying plate of drawingsl Figure 1 represents a central horizontal section of my invention, with the .hub and axle also shown in section.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same, the axle being shown wrong side up, to show the nick or notch in the cover. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A is the hub;'B is the iron axle; B! is the wooden axle; .H isa b ox or cover attached tothe axle B;'
O is a nick or slot in same; d is a clamp securing wooden axle B to iron axle B; D is a sand-head attached to hub A; a are ridges on-said head D, a short distance apart, forming in said sand-head Da groove or channel; n is a nut. The hub A and axle B are constructed of the ordinary materials, and inthe ordinary way. The hub A is fitted on the axle B,"and secured to the same by a nut, n, fitting on a lscrew-thread on the end of the a-xle B in the usual way. Upon the inner, end of the hub A, and rigidly secured to the saule, is a metallic ring or sand-head, D, so arranged as to cover the axle at a little distance from and revolve with the hub around the same within the box H, said 'ringy or said sand-head D forming a part of the hub, and extending in beyond the same a short distance over the axle. Upon the outside of said sand-head D, and near the end of the same, so as with the end of the hub'A to form two narrow grooves, are the ridges a', th'e object of said grooves being to catchany sand or dirt, andprevent the same from working into and injuring the'box 4or axle. Upon the axle B, and so as entirely to cover4 the sand-head D, and rigidly secured to said axle, is a box or cover, H, the said cover H being in the form of a cup or box with the opening towards the hub A, the vother end or bottom being provided with a hole through which passes the axle B, and by which said bottom or end said cover H is fastened to said axle B, the sand-head D extending out beyond the hub A,4 so as to touch and revolve against the bottom or end of said box H, so as to admit no sand or dirt between` said sand-head D and the end of said box H. Said box H is provided on'the under side of the saine, as shown in the drawing, fig, 2, with a 4nick or notch, through which the sand caught bythe grooves in the sand-head D falls to the ground. The
operation is readily scen from the drawing.'
Constructed as above described, .it constitutes a neat and cheap apparatus for preventinginjury to the` boxes and axles of carriages from thefgrinding of sand working'in between said axles and said boxes, I claim as new, and desire `to Secure by'LettersPatent- 5 The sand-head D, in 'combination with the hub A and cover H and axle B, substantially as shownV and described, and for the purposes set forth.
