The casing is preferably placed in an angular position, as indicated in Fig. 1, B in this figure representing a portion of a wall or other support to which the rear face of the casing is fastened. The casing has an open top normally covered by a hinged lid O,whichmay be opened when it becomes necessary to renew the supply of paper, and inthe cover or other desired portion of the casing are a number of openings L, through which the quantity of paper in the casing may be ascertained without the necessity of opening the cover.

The outer side of the box or casingis formed of two sheets of metal M and N,slightly spaced to form a compartment which is closed bythe main lid or cover 0, access to this compartment being had only when the lid is raised, and the latter being provided, if necessary, with a suitable lock or other securing device to prevent its being opened by any unauthorized person. The outer metallic sheet N forms a frame in which advertisements may be displayed, a number of openings 0, of any desired shape and size, being formed in the metallic sheet in order to display the card advertisements in the compartment formed by the sheets M and N.

The holder or casing is adapted for the reception of sheets of paper inter-folded in the manner more clearly shown in Fig. 7. Each sheet is folded on itself to form two leaves, and the folding-lines of alternate sheets are oppositely disposed, the leaves being interfolded in such manner that the two leaves of each sheet will be held between the corresponding leaves of the sheets on each side thereof. With paper folded in this manner the withdrawal of one sheet through a discharge-slot will project a portion of one leaf of the next succeeding sheet in convenient position to be caught and withdrawn, and in this manner the sheets may be withdrawn successively until the contents of the holder are exhausted.

In carrying out the invention it is preferred to arrange the discharge-slot in the manner more clearly shown in Fig. 5. In the end of the casing is formed a vertical or nearly vertical slot E, said slot being formed at about the center of the width of the casing and the end wall of said casing being bent inwardly from the opposite sides to the wall of the slot, as indicated in Fig. 5, so that the column of paper may be supported at about the center, and small chambers will be formed within the casing on each side of the slot in order to prevent undue pressure of the column of paper on the folding-lines. This permits of the ready unfolding of the sheet without unnecessary friction and without danger of tearing. To further provide for the projection of the end of each sheet to a position convenient for the user, the walls of the slot are thickened by bending the metal in the triangular form indicated at c, this thickened wall serving to the slot. To provide against this and to render the pressure of the discharge-point substantially uniform, I employ retarding or retaining devices H, which are formed .of thin sheets of preferably elastic metal or other material bent into the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, presenting an elongated inclined face for contact with the edges of the sheets of paper. The retarding devices are arranged opposite each other, and as they possess an inherent tendency to spring outward from the sides toward the middle of the box the effective width of the box or casing is reduced and the downward movement of the sheets of paper under the force of gravity is resisted, the sheets being slightly curved, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4, and the weight of the column above the springs is to a considerable extent supported by said springs and the pressure at the discharge-slot is reduced. The springs have a fixed limit of spreading movement less than the width of the sheet, so that no matter how great the weight of the column may be all of the sheets will be slightly curved and the downward movementretarded. Where the length of the box or casing is such as to contain a very large quantity of paper, we may em ploya number of these retaining devices arranged at frequent intervals in order to prevent too great pressure near the discharge end of the box, or where a comparatively small quantity of paper is used we may employ a rolling or sliding weight, as indicated at J in Figs. 2 and 4, or a spring may be employed to assist in the movement of the paper in the direction of the discharge-slot.

In toilet-paper holders of ordinary use it is generally necessary to wait until the entire supply of the holder has been withdrawn before the same can be replenished, or if this is not done any remainder of a previous supply goes to Waste. Further than this the holders are necessarily of limited size and can contain but a comparatively small quantity of paper. With a device constructed in accordance with this invention an additional package or packages of paper may be placed in position at any time by opening the lid or cover and interfolding the top sheet contained in the holder with the first sheet of the fresh package. The outer face of the casing projects from the wall or support for a distance of little more than the length of a half-sheet, while the length of the box is limited only by the size of the apartment, so that it does not need constant attention. The position of the column of paper, the edges resting on the surface of the box, forms in connection with the retardingdevices a perfectly uniform feed, the pressure at the dischargingpoint being always the same without regard to the quantity of paper in the box or casing.

While the construction v herein described andillustrated in the accompanying drawings is the preferred form of the device, it is obvious that various changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. I

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a device of the class specified, a casing having a rear or wall side for securement to a supporting means, and interfolded sheets of paper supported in vertical position within the casing and disposed in planes at a right angle to the plane of the rear or wall side,

4. The combination with the box or casing adapted to contain a quantity of interfolded sheets and provided with a discharge-slot, of a pair of oppositely-disposed retarding devices carried by the casing and having a fixed limit of spreading movement less than the width of the sheets of paper.

5. The combination with a box or casing having a discharge-slot and adapted to contain a quantity of interfolded sheets, of retarding devices arranged within the casing and serving to engage and curve or bend the sheets of paper as the latter move in'the direction of the discharge-slot.
