ALEXANDER JOHN OBRIEN, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO CHARLES A. GAULT, OF BELOIT, VISCONSIN.
OIL-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 741,820, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed March 30,1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER JOHN OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon or oil burners.
The object is to provide a burner of this character which can be used for generating heat in hot-air furnaces, stoves, hot-water heaters, steam-boilers, and the like.
Another object is to provide improved means for heating the oil, removing the impurities, and converting the same into gas before reaching the burners. Y
With these and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed outin the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the burner complete. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional View; and Fig. 4 is a View similar toFig. l, showing the burner inclosed in a casing or boX.
In the drawings, l denotes the oil-tank; 2, lthe oil-feed pipe, provided with a valve 3 for regulating the flow of oil from the tank.
4 denotes the generator or retort, which has a fiat top and a vertical side and is cut away on one side on a curve to form a depending flange 8 and an overhanging shoul- The retort has a longitudinal retortpassage formed in its upper portion arranged for the connection of the feed or supply pipe at one end. A vapor-discharge tube lO is connected to the other end of the said pas` sage and ends in the horizontally-disposed pipe 9, arranged beside the depending flange and beneath the overhanging shoulder of the retort or generator and provided with a series of burner openings or jets l2, which are arranged to discharge the gas or vapor against the curved portion of the retort. The same Serial No. 150,217. (No model.)
beingignited effects the thorough heating of the retort audits passage, as will be understood. The depending tiange Son the rear side of the retort or generator forms a shield or wall for the purpose hereinaftery stated.
Beneath the burner-tube is arranged a driptrough 13, into which a small quantity of oil may be run and lighted to start the generator. In Fig. 4 the generator and burner-pipe are shown inclosed in a sheet-metal box or casingle, open at its upper side, and in the conical shaped bottom thereof is formed a centrally-disposed opening l5, surrounded by a iixed, downwardlyextending, and flaring iiange 16, an annular series of holesl also being formed through the bottom, as shown.
`The purpose of the casing is to create a suction of air into its lower end and discharge the same in a blast at its upper open end.
The construction of the'generator, as herein shown, with a rear shield or wall is for the purpose of deliecting or directing the flame up and around the body of the same to constantly heat the oil-passage therein and to prevent the draft through furnace or stove from blowing the flame from the burners away from contact with the generator. The carbon lining in the passage 6 has a catalytic action on the oil in its conversion into vapor and being porous acts as a sieve to catch the impurities and prevents clogging up of the burner-pipe.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation ot the invention will be readily understood without re` qniring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention'. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a burner, a retort having a passage formed therein for Vaporizing oil to be supplied to the burner, and a lining-tube of porous carbon in said passage, substantially as described.
2. A horizontally-arranged retort having a ICO Vof burner-openings arranged to discharge against the curved portion of the retort, substantially as described.
3. A horizontally-arranged retort having a dat top and Vertical side, and cut away on one side'on a curve, to form a depending flange portion, and an overhanging shoulder, having a retort-passage formed in its upper portion arranged for the connection of a supplypipe at'one end, and a vapor-discharge tube connected to the other end of said passage and ending in a horizontal pipe arranged beside said depending ange and beneath the overhanging shoulder andv provided with a series of burner-openings arranged to discharge against the curved portion of Vthe retort, in combination with a casing inclosing said retort and discharge-tube and provided with a downwardly-extended neck portion having air-inlet openings therein, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER JOHN OBRlEN. Witnesses:
