Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellefonte, in the county of Center and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined Swing and Lawn Chair, of which'the. following is a specification.

The invention relates to a combined swing and lawn-chair.

The object of the present invention is to provide a combined swing and lawn-chair adapted to be suspended from a ceiling-or other suitable support to operate as a swing and capable of being placed upon a'- stand whereby it is converted into a lawn-chair.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which" the back, seat, and drop sections or frames will be pivotally connected and freely movable when arranged either to form a swing or a lawn-seat to enable the occupant to sit in an upright position or to recline without leaving the device to adjust the parts. 1

V The invention consists injthe construction and novel combination and arrangement .of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointe out in the claims hereto ap'pended. r

and the said upright sidebars are connected i at their upper ends by a top cross-bar or rung 2 and are pivotedat their lower ends by screws 3 or other suitable fastening devices to horizontal side bars 4 of a se'atframe or section. The seat frame or section is 001m posed of the bars 4, a front cross-bar or rung 5, and a rear transverse rod or brace 6 which is angularly bent adjacent to its ends to extend it below a continuous strip of fabric 7 and which is secured to the rear ends of the side bars of the seat-frame by the pivots 3. The front cross-bar or rung of the seat-frame has its ends 8 rounded to form journals and is arranged in perforations of the bars 4 and upright side bars 9 of a drop-frame which depends from the front of the seat-frame. The side bars of the drop-frame extend above the seat-frame and are connected at their lower ends by a transverse bar or rung l0 and bya foot piece or board 11. The foot board or piece 11 is rigidly secured at its ends to the upright side bars of the drop-frame, and the transverse baror rung 10 has its ends secured in perforations of the side bars 9. The side bars 9 of the drop-frame are pivoted at their '86 upper ends by screws 12 to horizontal arms 13 of the chair, and these arms extend rearward to the upright side bars of the back fram'e'or section and are pivoted to the same above the seat frame or section by means'of screws 14 orother suitablefasteningdevices. The continuous strip of fabric may be of canvas or any other stout material, and its ends are wrapped around and secured to the top and bottom transverse rungs 2 and 10 of the chair frame. The chair-frame, which is supported by the means hereinafter described, is readily adjustable to the .formof the occupantiand is adapted to enable a person occupying it to sit in an upright position or to recline init, and 5 it will automatically adjust itselftoa person as he assumes such a position. The strip of clothorfabric may be connected with the transverse rod or brace at therear end of the seat-frame by loops, if desired, or it may be left perfectly free at this point.

The arms 13'of the chair are provided near theirendswithdependingtenonsorpins15 and 16, which are adapted to detachably engage removable slide-bars 16 or a stand 17 to enable the chair to be arranged in the form of a swing or hammock-chair or as a lawn-chair or seat. The detachable side bars are pro vided at their rear ends with perforations 18 and at their front portions with recesses 19 to receive the tenons or pins, and their terminals are provided with slots or bifurcations 20 for the reception of the ends of the suspending-ropes, which are provided with suitable stops 21, preferably consisting of knots and washers arranged on the ropes and interposed between the knots and the lower faces of the detachable supporting side bars. The suspending-ropes are adapted to be attached to the top of a porch, to the limb of a tree, or to any other desired support, and the supporting side bars and the ropes maybe readily detached when it is desired to take down the chair or to arrange it on a stand to form a lawn-chair.

The stand 17 consists of front and rear legs 22 and 23 and connecting bars or rungs, and the said legs are provided at their upper ends with sockets 24 and 25 to receive the depending pins or tenons 15 and 16. When the chair is arranged upon the stand, it is firmly supported and the back seat and drop frames or sections are capable of free pivotal movement to permit the parts to adjust themselves to the position of a person, as before de-' scribed. The arms of the chair are provided at their rear ends with projections or pins 26, forming stops for limiting the downward movement of the upper or outer portion of the back frame or section of the chair. By the construction before described the chair may be readily arranged to form a hammockchair or swing or a lawn seat or chair, and it may be quickly converted from one to the other, as desired.

In Figs. 6 and 7 of the accompanying drawings is illustrated aslightmodificationof the invention, in which the arms 27 of the chair are extended and provided with slots or bifurcations 28, adapted to receive the ends of suspending-ropes 29 or other means to form a swing or hammock-chair. The supporting or suspending ropes are provided with suitable stops 30,similar to those before described. The extended arms are pivoted near their rear ends to the upright side bars 31 of the back frame or section, which is provided at the top with a transverse rod or rung 32 to receive the upper end of the strip of cloth 33. The seat frame or section is composed of side bars 34, connected at their rear ends by a brace 35 and pivoted by suitable fastening devices to the lower ends of the upright side bars of the back frame or section. The dropframe is provided with side bars 36, which are pivoted at their upper ends to the front portions of the arms 27 and which are similarly connected near their upper ends to the side bars of the seat frame or section, and the said side bars 36 are connected by suitable rungs 37 and 38 at their lower ends. The seat-frame is provided at its front with a transverse rung 39, which forms a pivot for the drop-frame. The back, seat, and drop frames are pivotally connected similar to those heretofore described, and they are capable of automatically adjusting themselves to the position assumed by the occupant. The rearward movement of the back frame or section is limited by suitable stops 40, mounted on the extended portions of the arms, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

What I claim is- 1. A device of the class described comprising an upright back-frame composed of side bars, and a top connecting-rung, a horizontal seat-frame composed of side bars pivotally connected at their rear ends with the bottom of the back-frame, and front and rear cross-bars, a drop-frame pivotally connected to the side bars of the seat-frame and depending below the same and extended above the seat-frame, horizontal arms pivotally connected with the top of the drop-frame and with the back-frame and extended in rear of the latter and provided with stops, a continuous piece of cloth extending from the top of the back-frame to the lower portion of the drop-frame and supported by the front crossbar, the rear cross-bar being angularly bent at its ends to ofiset it from the cloth, and supporting means detachably interlocked with the arms at points beyond the drop and back frames, substantially as described.

3. A device of the class described comprisa back-frame, a seat-frame pivotally connect ed with the back-frameat the bottom thereof, a drop-frame pivotally connected between its ends with the front of the seat-frame and extending above and below the same, horizontal arms pivotally connected to the top of the drop-frame and to the lower portion of the back-frame, and provided with depending pins, horizontal supporting-bars detachably interlocked with the arms and engaging the pins and provided with slots, and suspending tal arms pivoted to the top of the drop-frame and to the back-frame and provided with de- '10 pending tenons or pins, and detachable supporting means provided at opposite sides of the device with sockets receiving the tenon's or pins, substantially'as described.
