IMPROVED SUB-AQUBOUS TUBE.

TO ALL WHOMT MAY CONCEBN:
Be it known that I, T. F. ROWLAND, of Greenpoint, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented av new und useful Improvement in Constructing and Protecting Subuqu'e'ous Tubes; 'und 'I do hereby dechire that thc following is n' full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others skilled in the art to mukc'nnd use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis suecication.
This invention relates to :knew-'and useful improvement in constructing und protecting subuqueous iron tubes; and it consistsin encompassing the sume with blocks of cement or tile, arranged or vapplied in the nuan- -ner substantially as hereinnfter set forth, whereby therwuter cannot come irl-contact with the iron'tube, nor the' tile'or cement-blocks be detached from the'tube. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is u trsnsverseverticol section of my invention, taken in the line a: x, iig. 3.
Figure 2, u longitudinal section of a. portion ofA the sume, taken ,in the line y y,.`1g. 3.
Figure 3, un external View of u portion of the sume, tukenin thel'ine y y, g.
Figure 4, un external view of al portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y
lA represents un iron tube, which I design to construct of rolled-iron plates, of suitable size, having their edges ubutted together, and secured in close contact by means of metal straps a, which are fitted over thejoints at the inner side of the tube, und to which vstraps theedges of the plates :tre riveted, as will be understood by referring to figs. 1 und 2. AOn'. Athe exterior of'this iron tube A, at suitable distances upzirt, I shrink or otherwise secure o'r attach angles or T-shztped. bands B, to which bolts C are secured by pivots ut equa-l und suitable distances spurt. D, represents blocks, of'tile or cement, of suitable nud equal size, of quudrilnterul form, and euch being the section of a. cylindrical tube. Thos-e blocks ure fitted together by tongues b and grooves e, us shown clearly in iig. 2,*one rowoi' blocks being` provided with tongues IJ, und the lcdjoining row provided with grooves c', to rcceive'thc tongues. The endsof the -blocks D, which are not provided with the tongues or grooves, are cut out or recessed, as shown at LZ, to receive blocks E, us will be understood clearly by referring to iig. 2; and these blocks E have the belts C passing centrally through them, the 'blocks D being directly over the bands B. Thesebolts C are provided with nuts e, which, 1vwhen screwed down, it iu countersinksfin the outer surfaces oi" the blocks E.
It will be seen'from the above description thut by this arrangement the tile or cement-blocks will all be rmly secured to the iron tube, andvcunnotvpossibly become detached therefrom. l After the blocks D E ure secured to the iron tube A, their exterior surfaces are covered with cement, whichills up the countcrsinksf, in which the screw-nuts e ure fitted, und also fills upthe joints between the blocksD E'. By this ineens n perfectly watertight covering is obtained for the iron tube, and the letter will consequently lust un indeniteperiod of time.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is The application to the exterior of a. subequeous iron tube, of blocks composed of cement, tile, or other s`uitable material, secured to the tube by tongues,l und grooves,`and bolts, in the manner substantially as herein shown and described.
THOS. F. ROWLAND.
