GEORGE AUGUSTUS HOLM, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,841, dated M15} 14., 1903. Application filed December 18, 1901. Renewed January 23. 1903. Serial No. 140,314. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE AUGUSTUS HOLM, a citizen of the United States of America, anda resident of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold Account and Sales Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to manifold account and sales books inwhich a means is provided to give the customers and dealers a complete balanced account of their purchases and at the same time making and retaininga duplicate or triplicate copy of said account; and
the objects of my improvements are, first,
to construct a manifold account and sales book that can be opened and closed the same as an ordinary book when in use; second, to provide a manifold account and sales book that is simple in construction and convenient to use and adapted to save time in'bookkeeping. v
Theinvention therefore consists of a manifold account and sales book constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view showing the leaves of the book and the carbon-sheet in position to take the sales in duplicate or triplicate by writing upon the blank sheet over the carbon-sheet and making a duplicate or triplicate copy upon the blank sheet or sheets immediately under and adjacent to the carbon-sheet. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the method of binding the leaves to a cover composed of three parts and joined together by means of suitable flexible hinges. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the method of binding the leaves and carbon-sheet to the cover. Fig. 4 is an end view showing the original and duplicate leaf with thecarbon-sheet in position for use.
Fig. 5 is an end view showing the book closed preparatory to filing or taking it from a cabinet or case.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, A represents the cover, which is made of any suitable flexible material. It can be of one piece, as shown in Fig. 2, or in three parts joined together by Immediately under the section 0 and adjacent to the covera carbon-sheet E is attached. The center portion of the cover A supports a carbon-sheet and affords a means of keeping it in a perfect plane when in use and also forms the back portion of the cover. Thev leaf-section O is adapted to receive the original memoranda of sales and is bound to the cover on the right side, as shown in Fig. 4. The duplicate memoranda-leaf section 0 is bound on the left side and is adapted to receive such impressions as are indorsed upon the original leaf through the medium of the carbon-sheet.
When it is desired to use the book, a leaf F of the duplicate section Ois turned over and made to lie upon the back portion of the cover between the lines X X, the carbonsheet is turned over and lies upon the duplicate leaf F, the original leaf F is turned over and lies upon the carbon-sheet. Any desired data can be indorsed upon the original leaf and the duplicate leaf will receive the impression. The original leaf is given to the customer. The carbon-leaf Eis turned over,
leaving it lying upon the original leaf-section.
The duplicate leaf or leaves, as the case may be, remain lying adjacent to and upon the central or middle portion of-the cover. A
complete record and balanced account are thereby retained, showing all transactions between the customer and dealer up to date. The book is closed in the usual manner, leaving the leaf-sections overlapping each other, as shownin Fig. 5. The leaves can be ruled,
numbered, or any other suitable mattercan be printed thereon to suit the various uses to which the book may be applied.
I prefer to bind the leaves to the cover, as shown in Fig. 2, with a double perforation. It is obvious that the leaves can be bound in the usual manner without deviating from the principle involved in my invention.
In Fig. 3 a modification of my invention is shownthat is, the leaf-sections G and O and carbon-sheet E are bound to the flexible hinges which join the parts of the cover together.
By constructing a manifold account and sales book as described it will be noted that the cover is adapted to provide a support for the carbon and also forms the back portion of the cover of the book.
If it is desired, the book can be used for making triplicate copies. In place of the carbon-sheet used in making duplicate copies a double-faced carbon-sheet is used. The duplicate section 0 is made up of leaves varying in color alternately. One of the duplicate leaves is turned over and lies upon the center portion of the cover, and the carbon-sheet is turned over and lies immediately over or adjacent to the leaf. A second duplicate leaf of a different color, the second duplicate leaf being of tissue or transparent material, is turned over and lies upon the top of the carbon-sheet. The original leaf is then turned over, and any desired data are written thereon, and the duplicate and triplicate leaves receive the impression. The leaves of both leaf-sections may be perforated, if desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A manifold account and sales book comprising a three part cover of rectangular shape, the cover hinged twice at right angles to its length, independent single leaf-sections secured along the line of hinges and a carbonsheet secured with one of the leaf-sections.
2. A manifold account and sales book comprising a threepart cover of rectangular shape, the cover hinged at two points at right angles to the length of the cover, two leafsections composed of single leaves secured along the lines of hinges, the leaves of one of the leaf-sections provided with perforations whereby they may be detached from the cover, and a carbon-sheet secured to the cover at one of the hinged portions.
3. A manifold account and sales book comprising a three-part cover of rectangular shape, the cover hinged at two points at right angles to the length of the cover, two leafsections composed of single leaves secured along the lines of hinges, the leaves of one of the leaf sections provided with perforations whereby they may be detached from the cover and a carbon -sheet secured to the cover at one of its hinged portions.
4. A manifold account and sales book corn- I prising a three-part cover of rectangular shape, the cover hinged twice at right angles to its length, independent single-leaf sections secured along the lines of hinges and a double-faced carbon-sheet secured with one of the leaf-sections.
5. A manifold account and sales book comprising a flexible cover of rectangular shape, the cover divided into three sections by means of two bends extending at right angles to the length of the cover, two leaf-sections composed of single leaves, secured along the lines of hinges, one of the leafsections provided with perforations whereby the leaves of that leaf-section may be detached from the cover and a carbon-sheet secured to the cover, between one of the leaf-sections and the cover along the line of hinge thereof.
6. A folding manifold account and sales book comprising a folding cover of rectangular shape, the cover divided into three sections by means of two integral bends extending at right angles to its length, a plurality of leaf-sections composed of single leaves secured along the lines of hinges, the single leaves of the leaf-sections adapted to overlap each other and overlie the middle section of the cover, certain leaves having weakened lines near the line of attachment to the cover, and a carbon-sheet secured with the cover.
7. A manifold account and sales book comprising a three-part cover of rectangular shape, the cover hinged twice at right angles to its length, independent leaf-sections comprising detachable leaves secured to the cover along the lines of hinges, the sections located a predetermined distance apart so as to permit the infolding of a leaf of one leafsection upon a leaf of the opposite leaf-section and a carbon-leaf hinged parallel with the independent leaf-sections and adapted to lie between the superposed leaves.
Signed by me at Mansfield, Richland county, Ohio, this 6th day of September, 1901.
GEORGE AUGUSTUS HOLM.
