WILLIAM CRAIG, OF UVNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 73,167, dated January 7, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOUR-BOLTS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that l', WILLIAM CRAIG, of Uniontown, in the'county of Fayette, and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and improved Flour-Bolt; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in Which- Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of my improved ilouring-mill, taken in the plane of the line z z, fig. 2. i
Figure 2 is a. plan, with some portions of the mill removed lto exhibit the interior arrangement of the elevators and double bolting-cloths. v
Figure 3 is a transverse section of the bolting-chest, taken in the line yy, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. i I
This invention relates to an improved flour-bolt in a portable onring-mill, and consists of two hexagonal cloths, arranged one within the other on the same reel, and separated by a. close partition-cloth, as will be hereinafter more fully described The general arrangement of a portablesmill is also shown, to which my improved bolt is applied. n
Two run ofthirty-six inch burr-stones are set sideby side, as shown in plan, fig. V2. The upper stone, A, is made stationary, and the lower stone, A', is the runner.v They are to be set in cast-iron frames, and the lower one supported by an iron plate. The hoppers B are arranged in the ordinary way. The stones are both operated directly by one horizontal spur-wheel, a, which is placed between` them, below on the shaft al, and gears into pinons, a2, on the spindles. On the shaft a1 is placed a pulley, b, to be connected by a belt with a drivingpulley operated by steam or water-power. Under the 'main wheel a, on the same shaft, is placed bevel-wheel, e, gearing into the bevel e on the shaft f, which passes horizontally through the bottom of the elevator-box Z, containing double flour-elevators; The shaft f extends beyond the elevator-box Z, and carries the long screwconveyor C; and on its outer extremity is placed a bevel-wheel, g, which gears into-the'bevel g on the vertical shaft h, carrying the bevel-gear z' i, for operating the conveyor D directly, and the short conveyor E above, by means of cog-gear k. k. The shaft h also operates the bolting-apparatus, by means of cog-gear l on its upper end, and Z on the shaft F of the bolt-reel m.
The double elevatorsjn the trunk Z are constructed in theusual Way. n n are the'elevators or belts, provided with buckets, and running over the rollers s s at the upper end, and t t at the lower end, on the shaft f. The double elevators are separated by a-partition, u. They receive the flour from the two run of stones by separate spouts, u1 u2, and deliver it, by separate spouts, 'a3 u, into separate bolting-cloths, through thehead m2 of the chest G. v i
My improved bolting-apparatus consists of two hexagonal cloths, arranged, onewithin another,- on the same reel, m. 'u is the inside and 'v1 the outside bolting-cloth, separated by a close partition-cloth, v, al1 of which are fastened to the reel by ribs, m1, and are so constructed and arranged that the outside and inside bolting-clotbs shall receive the flour separately from the double elevators, and deliver it, as bolted, into separate division'sor compartments of the bolting-chest, according 'to the different qualities orv grades of flour and bran. The bolting-cloths 'v 111 are secured to the reel m by-placing the ribs ml on the outsideinstead o f the inside, as
usual, giving a continuous smooth surface on the inside of the bolts, so that the flour slides from one end to the,
other without interruption, carrying thevbran along smoothly'in front, instead of being raisedand thrown down by the ribs when placed on the inside, as usual. which forces tine particles ofbran through the cloth, and specks thc flour.
The inside bolting-cloth 11 extends from end to end of the chest G, the boltedilour of finest quality falling` upon the partition-cloth v2, which delivers it'intothe transverse compartment H in the chest G, while the next lower grade of flour falls into the compartment I, and the bran falls from the outer end into the compartment K.
The outside bolting-cloth c is shorter than the partitionclotl1 v'i, and the finer flour falls 'directly into the .large compartment M, while the bran falls from'thc end of the bolting-clothinto the compartment L.
'.lhe compartments K L are provided with side spears. 1u w, for discharging the bran, and the chamber with the spout wl, for theinferior flour.
lhe compartment H, which receives the tine flour from the inside halting-cloth c, opens into the box of the short 'conveyor E, which is provided with zt spout to discharge the our by itself, when desired, and also with :t trap-slide to discharge it into the box of the conveyor D, to mix it with the Flour from the outside bolting-clotli v1.
Both run of stones may thus grind grain of one kind, or two kinds of grain may he grounfl at the sztm'e time on seperate stones, and the iour kept separate.
The conveyor D is provided with spouts, wz, in the usual Way, for discharging different grades of ilour, and also With return-spouts, w3, which discharge int-o the bex ofthe longr conveyor C, by which the eoarser lour is conducted to the elevator, to be carried by it to the bolting-nppavrzttus to be reboltefl.
I do not claim the separate parts of my device as new in themselves, but
I do claim the bolt, constructed as described, having the partition v2 between the outer and inner holtingcloths v el, operating substantially as clescriheclfor the purpose speced.
WILLIAM CRAIG.
