PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT HAYES,y OF WASHINCTON,.DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR To NICHOLAS AUTH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT or COLUMBIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,710, dated May 19, 1903.
" Application inea December 5, 190,2. serial No. 134,024. (No model.)
the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingl had-tothe -accom-l panying drawings, and to the letters of refer` a part of ence marked thereon, which form this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvelnents in branding appliances and heating apparatus; and it consists in the provision of an oil-atomizerV communicating with a mixing-chamber, where the vaporized oil and steam are thoroughly commingled before being ignitedat the burner, suitable means being provided to break up and equally distribute the ame, so that the branding-surfaces will be uniformly heated.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved branding apparatus shown as held adjacent to a table. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the branding apparatus with the oil-tank shown in elevation, and Fig. 3 isV I 5o air-pipe from a force-pump may be connected to apply a suitable pressure upon the surface vwhich oil enters from the tubing A.
cumferential flange G adjacent to one end,
and said cylinder is held to the boxing F by means of a nut I, which fits over a contracted threaded portion of said boxing, whereby the inner wall'ofsaid cylinder is continuous with the chambered portion of the boxing into A portion of the circumference of said oil-cylinder G is threaded, as at g, to receive the mixingchamber K, which has one end apertured and provided ,with screw-threads to engage the threads g. A needle-Valve L is mounted horizontally in said oil-cylinder,mixing-chamber, and boxing, and has rack-teeth L adjacent to one end adaptedto mesh with said pinionwheel H and is provided with two conical valvesNand N',the formerofwhichis adapted to control the passage of vaporized oil through .the Vport O in the tapering end of the oil-cylinder, while the valve N' is designed to con'- trol the passage of the'vaporized oil and steam which passes through the port n at the apex of said mixing-chamber. A pipe R leads into said mixingchamber and through which steam is allowed to'enter the chamber from any source ofsupply.
Mounted upon a bracket-arm S, which isl fastened to the oil-reservoir, is a chamber T, having an aperture in its circumference, through which the tapering end of said mixing-chamberpasses, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, Said chamber has a perforated bottom T' and a top T2, supporting branding-plates W, there being two of these plates shown in the drawings; but any number may be utilized, if desired. Secured to said top T2 and projecting downward in the chamber T and arranged preferably in circular series are the rods J which are provided for the purpose of breaking up the ame and distributing the heat uniformly IOO within the chamber T. These rods also serve as means for retaining heat and assisting in the combustion of the vaporized fuel as it issues through the port controlled by the Valve N'.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of apparatus embodying my invention the oil and steam in the mixingchamber will become heated by proximity of the latter to the heating-chamber, as said mixing-chamber extends into the heatingchamber, thereby causing a rapid combustion as the spray issues from the exit end of the mixing-chamber. sired to be branded may be placed uponthe branding-plates and the apparatus may be positioned adjacent to a table, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings, for conveniencein use. The branding-plates will be highly heated by the intense heat generated by means of the burner apparatus, in which the oil is thoroughly atomized and mixed with the steam prior toits being forced out of the mixing-chamber and ignited at the burner end of the mixing-chamber, and by means of the Valves positioned Within the Oil-cylinder and mixing-chamber the supply of fuel being fed to the burner may be readily adjusted, there- ,by insuring any degree of heat desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tose'cure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A branding apparatus comprising a fuelreservoir,an oil-cylinder communicating with said reservoir through a Valve-regulated passage-Way,a heating-chamber, a mixing-chamber having a tapering end entering the latter and communicating therewith and also With said oil-cylinder, a steam-inlet pipe communicating with said mixing-chamber, a shaft having valves adapted to control the exit- Hams or other articles de ports of said mixing-chamber and cylinder, a rack and pinion for moving said shaft to simultaneously open and close said valves, and branding-platessupported upon said heatingchamber, as set forth.
2. A branding apparatus comprising an oilreservoir, a bracket-arm supported thereon, a heating-chamber mounted on said arm, brand ing-plates supported upon the heating-chamber, and circular series of detlecting-rods projecting down from the top of said chamber, a mixing -chamber communicating with said heating-chamber, an oil-cylinder with pipe connection with said reservoir and extending into the mixing-chamber and having a tapering and apertured end communicating with the mixing-chamber, and valves regulating the exit-ports in said cylinder and mixingchamber, as set forth.
3. Abraudingapparatus comprising an oilreservoir, a valve regulated pipe leading therein, a' boxing mounted on said tubing, a shaft journaled in said boxing and having a pinion-Wheel thereon, an oil-cylinder held to said boxing,a mixing-chamber having threaded connection with the circumference of the oil-cylinder, a heating-chamber communicating through the mixing-chamber With said cylinder, a steam-inlet pipe communicating With said mixing-chamber, valves communicating With said ports in said cylinder and mixing-chamber, and rack-teeth on the stem of the valves in mesh with said pinion, and branding-plates mounted upon the heatingchamber, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof l hereunto afx my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
