UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
GRACE G. TICHENOR, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,639, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed April 16, 1901.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GRACE G. Tronnnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dust-pans; and it has for its object to provide a pan from which the dust will not be spilled and which pan will stand firmly in an upright position when placed upon the floor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of pan that permits it to be made from a single sheet of metal, other objects and advantages of the invention being apparent from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the blank from which the pan is made. Fig. 3 is a section on line a; 00 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a dust-pan the body portion of which is formed from a single sheet-metal blank. The blank, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, includes a body portion 5, from which extend lateral wings 6, of substantially triangular shape and which in the formation of the pan are bent to stand at right angles to the body portion 5. The body 5 has an extension 7 projecting beyond the narrowed ends of the wings 6, and this extension has its forward end bent at an acute angle upwardly on the line 8, and the extension 7 is then bent upwardly on the line 9, so as to lie between the wings 6, and at an acute angle to the body 5, so that the lower edge of the bent end portion 30 thereof rests upon the body5 and forms the front of the dust-holding portion or body of the pan. The side'edges of theportion 7 lie below the upper edges of the. side wings 6, and the part 7 forms an incline over which the dust is swept to fall upon the body 5 in the rear thereof. From the opposite end of the body 5 from the extension 7 projects a rearward extension 10, the outer end of which is of truncated triangular shape, as shown at 18, and this extension 10 is bent upwardly on Serial No. 56,073. Gl'o model.)
the linell to lie at an angle to the body 5, after which the truncated portion 13 is bent downwardly and outwardly on the line 12 at an acuteangle to form a rest, the edge portion 14 thereof being bent to form a foot. From the wings 6, at the rear end portions thereof, project ears 15, which are bent downwardly at acute angles, and the lower edges thereof are bent outwardly to form feet 16. At the rear ends of the wings 6 are formed the tabs 6, and at therear ends of the portions 15 are formed the tabs 15, which are bent so that when the pan is completed the tabs 6 will lie against the inner face of the portion 10 and the tabs 15 will lie against the inner face of the portion 13, in which position they may be soldered. The result of this construction is a dust-pan body having great rigidity and durability. Furthermore, it will be noted that after the dust has been brushed over the incline 7 it drops into the recess in the rear thereof, so that when the pan is moved from place to place there'is no danger of spilling its contents.
A handle shown at 17 is provided and is secured to the extension 10 and projects upwardly at right angles to the body 5,the upper portion thereof being being bent rearwardly and having a grip 18 attached thereto.
It will be understood that in practice modifications of the invention may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the parts thereof without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- A dust-pan formed of a single blank and including a bottom having upwardly-bent side and rear walls, said walls having downwardly and outwardly bent portions mutually connected and having their lower edge portions bent outwardly to form feet, said bottom having an extension at its front edge bent upwardly and rearwardly from the bottom and between the side walls thereof, the free end portion of such extension being bent downwardly against the bottom.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on the 19th day of March, 1901.
GRACE G. TIGHENOR.
