VUNITED STAT-ES PATENT OFFICE.'
GRANVILLE ROLAND FORTESCUE, OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
GAUNTLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,844, Adated October 21, 1902.
Application filed July Z6, 1902. Serial No. 117,156. (No model.)
To a/ZL whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRANVILLE ROLAND FORTESCUE, lieutenant United States Army, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauntlets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in riding-gauntlets and it consists in providing certain attachments to the cuff of the gauntlet, as will be hereinafter described.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters in both the views.
Figure lis an elevation of the gauntlet with the cuff attachments. Fig. 2 represents a section along the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
A represents the gauntlet, having a cuff A', the inner side of which is preferably stiened,
as at a', and on this inner side I vsecure the4 casing B, into which the compass D and the scratch-pad C are inserted. The scratch-pad C is held in place by means of the strap B', which is fastened to the button b. Thus it will be seen that the pad may be inserted or removed, as may be desired.
I have shown the top of the pad indented to fit against the compass D; but the compass may be omitted and the pad may be left straight or the compass may be put farther above the pad, so as to clear the same when the pad is inserted in the casing.
The casing B is preferably made of flexible leather and sewed to the cuff of the gauntlet. By placing the pad and compass on the left gauntlet the wearer can readily use the same to write memoranda on the pad, and the compass attachment combined with the pad is particularly useful for cavalrymen or 0thers riding in a strange country. Thus the rider can .jot down on the pad the time he passes a certain object and note by the compass the direction of the road or path, taking fresh memoranda whenever the road turns or his direction is altered. It will be seen that this attachment is particularly useful for mounted officers in the field.
Having thus described my invention, whatl I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a gauntlet provided with a frame secured to the sleeve thereof y and having three sides normally closed, with a detachable strap forming the fourth side, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a gauntlet provided With a frame secured to the sleeve thereof and having three sides normally closed, with a detachable strap forming the fourth side, and a scratch-pad slipped into ysaid frame and held in place thereby, substantially as described.
3. As an article of manufacture, a gauntlet provided with a frame secured to the cuff thereof, the said frame having three sides normally closed and one side formed of a detachable strap, a curved portion in one side of said frame, a compass partly engaged in said curved portion, and a scratch-pad indented to receive said compass and holding the same in position in said frame, the said scratch-pad being held in place by said detachable strap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
