Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer.- ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the coupling-nut and the packing for the joint at detachable connections between sections of hose for conveying water or other liquids orv gases.
The object of this invention is to provide a hose-coupling in which the packing-washer may be retained when the coupling is disconnected and in which the washer may perform its function as a joint-packing in a free and reliable manner without interference and injury thereto by the nut or by the nipples on account of being dragged by the nut in its rotation.
The invention consists of a coupling-nut provided with a packing-retaining cavity and a packing-washer in the cavity having a diameter greater than that of the threaded orifice of the nut; and it consists also in" the novel parts and in the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a hose-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention, parts of which are broken away to expose portions of hidden parts; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal sectional view of the coupling, showing the details of my improvements as preferably constructed; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view on the line as as in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a central longitudinal sectional view showing my improvements in a nut designed to be made in small sizes.

the flange a swiveled in the nut and having the joint-face h; B, the companion nipple, having the screw-threads Z) and the joint-face "i; C, the coupling-nut, having the screwthreads Z) for engaging the threads I) of the nipple, and E the packing-washer, all of the above parts being well known except as relates to the particular features embraced in my invention, which will now be described in detail.
The nut C may be made in any suitable form exteriorly to be operated by such types ,of wrenches as may be preferred.
It has the usual threads Z) in one end, and also the smooth-face flange m in the opposite end thereof for engaging the flange a of the nip- Between the flange m and the thread 1), adjacent to the bearing-face of the flange m, I form an annular cavity D of suitable width and of greater diameter than the diameter of the bore in which the threads 1) are formed, and in the said cavity I insert the packing-washer E, which I form with a diameter greater than the diameter of said bore in which the threads I) are formed and less in diameter than the diameter of the cavity D, and also the washer E has a body dimension, referring to thickness, which is less than the width of the cavity, so that when the nut O and the nipple B are connected and the washer E inserted in the cavityD the washer may be free to rotate in the cavity.
In some cases, particularly in the larger sizes of couplings having comparatively large packings, the nut O is composed of two parts, which are preferably detachable in order to easily renew the packing, the smaller part C, having the flange m as an integral part thereof, being suitably joined to the larger part or the nut proper. The two parts of the nut are preferably connected by means of screw-threads d and cl, these being preferably left-hand if the threads I) and b be righthand, as it is customary to make them. The part 0 has sockets e in which to insert a wrench, or the part may be adapted to be operated in any other suitable manner. The part 0 has a suitable shoulder, against which the part 0 is seated.
It will be understood that the nipple B may have and in the larger sizes should have exterior projections or squares or be suitably designed so that a wrench may be applied for holding the nipple against rotation thereof when tightening the coupling-nut.
In practical use the nipple B having been inserted in the nut G and the hose attached to the nipple in a suitable manner the packing-washer E may then be inserted in the cavity D, when connection may be made with another section of hose having the nipple B attached thereto, and as the nut is being rotated on the nipple the joint-faces h and i will be brought together and press the washer E between them without the washer being distorted or injured in any way, as it will be stationary,while the nut moves about it,and a tight joint will be assured, obviating the trouble that may be caused by the coupling-nuts i n common use, into which the washer may be crowded by reason of the nut dragging the washer or the edges thereof and forcing fragments between the joint-faces. lVhen the coupling is disconnected, it will be seen that the washer will be retained in the nut, so as to be ready for instant use when required when again connecting the hose-sections.
The utility and value of this improvement will be apparent particularly when applied to fire-hose.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. In a hose-coupling, the combination of the nut having the bearing-shoulder in its bore near one end thereof, the removable flange seated against said shoulder, the nipple having its external diameter corresponding to the internal diameter of said remov-- able flange, the flange on said nipple engaged by said removable flange, the hose extending over the exterior of said nipple and isolated from said removable flange and also said flange on said nipple, the thread in the opposite end of said nut, the flangeless nipple, the thread on said flangeless nipple, the hose extending over the end of said flangeless nipple, and the packing-washer between said nipples, as shown and described.
2. In a hose-coupling, the combination of the nut having the annular bearing-shoulder therein, the removable flange having the larger and the smaller bores at opposite ends thereof and seated against said shoulder, the nipple having the flange thereof extending into the said larger bore, the opposing nipple,the packing-wasl1er,and the hose attached to said nipples, as shown and described.
3. The herein-described improvement in hose-couplings having the flanged nipple, and the threaded opposing nipple cooperating with the nut, which improvement consists in the nut having the annular bearing-shoulder therein, and the removable flange gaged by said shoulder and seated thereon and also engaging said flanged nipple, the nut having the recess near said shoulder, as shown.
