UNTTED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
PATRICK FULLAM, OF CHURUBUSCO, INDIANA.
GATE-HINGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent .N o. 10,051, dated September 30, 1902.
Application filed December 16, 1901. Serial No. 86,153. (No mcdeLl Beit known that I, PATRICK FULLAM, actizen of the United States, residing at (Jhurubusco, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gatellinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention provides a gate-hinge of novel construction for use in connection with gates capable of vertical adjustment and adapted to swing open at either end from either approach.
For a full description of the invention and the merit-s thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means` for eecting' the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of theinvention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of a gate embodying the invention, the hinge members being connected at the opposite end. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the gate swung open. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of an end of the gate. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a gatepost, showing the parts ofthe hinge in position. Fig. 5is a horizontal section through an end of the gate and gate-post, showing the relation of the hinge members when the gate is closed. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, showing the position of the parts when the gate is open. Fig. 7 is a vertical section through a hinge.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The mountings are the same at each end of the gate and operate in the same manner. Hence a detailed description of one set Yonly will be given. Y
The gate l, which may beofrany pattern or size, is provided atA each end with a vertical rod 2 for reception of a Set of hinge members, which in the present instance consist of grablbetween the said bifurcations. vhooks 2'have their outer ends forked, so as hooks 3, mounted to slide freely on the said rods and operable by means ota weighted lever 4, fulcrumed to a block 5, attached to each of the parts 2 at a point between their ends. A rod or bar G connects the upper grab-hook 3 with the lower grab-hook and has pivotal connection intermediate of its ends with the lever 4, whereby both grabhooks are simultaneously operated to make engagement or cast off from the hinge members 7, attached to the hinge rod or bar S. A hook 9 is provided to support the lever t when raised to'elevate the grab-hooks and hold them out of engagement with the coperating members 7, so as to admit of the gate being swungopen from either approach.
A hinge rod or bar 8 is tted to each post l0 at the sides of the opening closed by the gate, eyebolts 1l being the connecting means and a bracket 12 preventing downward displacement of the part 8 when properly positioned. The outer end of the bracket 12 is of cup form to receive the lower end of the rod S, which is free to turn with the gate when swinging the latter open or shut. The hinge members 7 have sleeves at their inner ends through which the rod 8 passes, clampscrews 13 being fitted into threaded openings in the sides of said sleeves and adapted to secure the parts 7 in an adjusted position. The outer end of each hinge member 7 is bifurcated and the separated parts are oppositely curved, so as to extend upon opposite sides of the gate when the latter is closed, the end bars 2 being received in the space formed The grabto embrace opposite sides of the shank of the member 7 and interlock therewith and prevent disengagement of the gate from the hinge rod or bar S when liberated at one end and swung open.
When the gate is closed, it is held fast by the hinge members and each end being interlocked, the grab-hooks 3 engaging over the Shanks of the members 7 and the flared arms of the hinge members 7 coming between the bars 2 and the hooked ends of the parts 3. When it is required to open the gate, either one of the levers 4- is operated to disengage the grab-hooks 3 connected therewith from the hinge members 7, when the gate may be IOO swung open, as will be readily comprehended. After the gate has been closed it is again fastened by permitting the grap-hooks 3 to descend and engage with the parts 7.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In combination with a swinging gate and posts at the ends of the gate-opening, hingerods connected to the said posts, hinge members applied tothe hingerods, copcrating hinge members applied to the ends of the gate, and means for simultaneously moving the hinge members at either end of the gate t0 admit of their separation from or connection with the hinge members applied to the hinge-rods, substantially as specified.
2. In combination, posts, agate, hinge members applied to the said posts and having their outer ends enlarged, hinge members applied to the ends of the gate and approximately ot' the form of a grab-hook, and means for disconnecting the hinge members at either end of the gate from the post members to admit of opening the gate from either side 0r at opposite ends, substantially as described.
3. In combination, posts, agate, hinge meme bers applied to the said posts and having their outer ends forked and the fork members oppositely deflected, binge members applied to the ends of the gate and approximately of the form of a grab-hook, and means for disconnecting the hinge members at either end of the gate from the post members to admit of opening the gate from either side or at opposite ends, substantially as described.
4. 'In combination, a post, a rod connected with the post so as to turn about a vertical axis, hinge members adjustably connected with the said rod and having their outer ends forked, a gate, grab-hooks loosely mounted upon the gate, a connection between the grabhooks, and a lever for operating said connection to simultaneously move the grab-hooks, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK FULLAM. [L. s]
