GEORGE HADF'IELD,` OF' CINCINNATI, OHIO. Letters Patent No. 70,088, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT'IN SURGICAL CUPS.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HADFIELD, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Surgical Cups; and I hereby declare the following,to be a ful-l, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement consists in the provision of a broad, impervious, and highly flexible lijp, of prepared caoutchouc,'or gum-elastic, made applicable to the margin of a surgical 'fcup, whether intended for dry clipping or to be used in connection with scariication, vapor, or other medical agent; and the special bene` icial object of my invention is complete atmospheric exclusion, without any deleterious pressure upon and consequent constriction of'the capillaries, which always accompanies the use of the common surgical cup.
'I have selected for illustration the application of my invention tofdry cups designed for use in connectionwith an air-pump, as pertaining to the class of capping apparatus for which my invention is more particularly intended.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are axial sections illustrative of my improvement in its application to cups of various shapes, the same letters referring to like parts in the several figures.
The cup A may be of the represented or of any approved form, and may be furnished with n screw-neek or other coupling for the attachment of the suction pipe of an air-exhausting pump. A angavC, which projects all around the mouth of the cup,'serves to hold abroad and highly exible lip of caoutchouc E. The flexible and greatly 'extended sole or bearing surface e of the lip enables it to eii'ectually exclude the external air, without the painful and injurious local pressure caused by the rim or margin of the common surgical cup. The lip is susceptible of ready removal whenever it may be `'desired to cleanse,'repair, or change thecups. The
margin of the cup may have a concave, convex, or other form, so as to fit any specific part or member of the human body.
I claim hereas new, and of my invention- The provision for surgical cups of the broad, flexible, and impervious lip E e, formed and adapted to operate in the manner described. v
In testimony of which invention I hereunto s et my hand.
