JAMES N. BALLOU AND JOSEPH J. SHIRLEY, OF BUFFALO, NEW' YORK.
STEEL GRAIN-BIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,439, dated May 6, 1902.
Serial No. 58,725A (No model.)
Be it known that we, JAMES N. BALLOUand JOSEPH J. SHIRLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State ot New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steel Bins for Grain-Elevators; and we do hereby declare the following io be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had t-o the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which :form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in steel bins for grain elevators and storagehouses, and more particularly to that form commonly known as the cylinder construction, which consists of separate and complete steel cylinders placed closelytogetherin rows, the contacting sides being bolted or riveted together.
The object of our invention is to produce a series of bins possessing sufficient structural strength for the purpose and involving `a considerable saving in the amount of material required.
To that end our invent-ion consists of a series of bins each composed of separate cornersheets and interposed flat side sheets, the flat side sheets being secured between the contigl1-V ous corner-sheets of separate adjacent bins to form an inner side wall common to any two adjacent bins.
We will now minutely describe the manner in which we have carried out our invention and then claim what we believe to benovel.
In the drawings, Figure lis a top plan view showing a series of nine of our improved bins.
Fig.2 is apartial elevation of Fig. 1and Figa 3 is a modification.
Referring to the drawings, l l are the bins, with central outlets 2 in their iloors, through which the stored grain is removed. Each bin is composed of four corner-sheets 3, preferably ourved, as shown in Fig. l, and interposed between these curved corner-sheets 3 are the Where the side sheets 4 are jacent corner-sheets of the same bin; but
where they are located within they are secured between the contiguous corner-sheets of separate adjacent bins, thus serving in the double capacity of one side wall for two adjacent bins.
Between any fouradjacent bins constructed as above described are the inside pocket-bins 5, which may have separate outlets in their iioors or they may be tapped into the main bins. The outside pocket-bins 6 are formed by the sheets 7, which are secured to the side sheets 4 and corner-sheets 3, as shown in Fig. l.
The different parts of our improved bins are all bolted or riveted together so as to break joints, as clearly shown'in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 3 we have shown a modification of the corner-sheet 3, which instead of being curved is shown straight at the central portion 8, with bent end flanges 9 9, which are secured to the Yside sheets in building up the bins.
Under our improved construction each in ner side sheet 4 serves in the double capacity of a side wall for two adjacent bins, and in this manner avery considerable Saving in material is effected over the common system of providing separate and complete cylinders secured together at their contacting sides. At the Sametime our improved ybins possess sufficient structural rigidity to meet the strains imposed upon them by the stored grain.
Ve claim- 1. A series of bins for grain-elevators and storagehouses, each bin composedlof separate corner-sheets and interposed fiat side sheets,4 the iiat side sheets being secured between the contiguous corner-sheetsotseparate adjacent bins to form an inner side wall common to any two adjacent bins.
2. A series ot bins for grain-elevators and storage-houses, each bin composed of sepanames to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES N. BALLOU. JOSEPH J. SHIRLEY.
rate corner-sheets and interposed flat. side sheets, the Het side sheets being secured between adjacent corner-sheets of the same bin to form outer side Walls, and secured between I 5 the contiguous corner-sheets of separate ad- I l jacent bins to form an inner' side wail eom- \Vitnesses: mon to any two adjacent bins. W. T. MILLER, In testimony whereof we have signed our W. F. PFAFF.
