TOALL WHOM IT MAYCONCERN:
Be it known that I, M. BAKKER, of Humphrey, in the county of Cnttaraugus, and State ctv-New York, have invented a. new und useful Improvement inA E llptic-Spring Brace; :1nd I do hereby declare that the following is :t full', clear, und exact `description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a. side View of my improved brace attached to n. pair of elliptic springs.
Figure 2 is u vertical section of the sume, token through the line fc x, fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like'parts. I
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved met-ins by the use of' whiich' elliptic springs may be strongly and securely braced, and which, at the same time, will allow either of said springs to act without a. strain upon the other; and it consists of the combination of the brace-rods and small pivoted wheel with each other and with the elliptic springs, as hereinafter more fully described. Y
This brace is applicable to elliptic or half elliptic-springs wherever they are arranged in pairs, whether beneath the body of n. wagon, buggyseat, or in any other similar situation,
A und B ure elliptic springs, about the constructionof which there is nothing new. C and D are the brace rods, the size of which will depend upon the particular place in which they are used. The outer ends of the braces C und I) are secured tothe centre of the lower parts of the springs, as shown in Egs. 1 and 2, and their inner ends are pivoted to the upper and lower sides ofthe sinall wheel E, the axle or shaft of which is attached to or revolves in supports or eyes F,- securely attached to the middle pnrt'of the under side of the box or other body whichl the springs support. If necessary the under side of the box muy be grooved or channelled, as shown in figs. I and 2, to allow the'brace-rod attached to the upper part of the wheel E to pla-y freely. This brace thus constructed and arranged permits both springs to act-together, or either of them to act separately without any strain upon the other; and the coupling being'in the centre the sag ofthe boX affects both springs alike. v
I am aware of the rejected application of A. Cleveland, filed December 28, 1866, but asthis forms no part of my invention I do not therefore claim it. v
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent@ The urrangement'of the brace-rods C D, their outer ends secured tothe cen-tre of the lower part of the springs A B, their inner ends pivoted to the vertical wheel E pivoted to the bottom of the Wagon-box, as herein described for the purpose specified.
MARSHALL BARKER.
