H. L WHITE.l LAMP HANGER.
(Application led Apr. 20, 1901.)
(No Model.)

HERBERT L. VHITE, OF BONHAM, TEXAS.
LANI P-HANG ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,142, dated December 3, 1901. Application iiled April 20, 1901. Serial No. 56,706. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT L. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bonham, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Hanger, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp-hangers, particularly hangers for electric lamps; and the object is to provide a hanger of simple construction and by means of which a lamp may be easily adjusted and held as to height.
Iwill describe a lamp-hanger embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section on the line a; of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line i/ y of Fig. 1.
The lamp-hanger comprises an outer casing or tube l, which has a flaring or funnel-shaped upper end designed to be attached to a ceiling or the like, and lixed within the tuberor casing l is a guide-tube 2, the upper end of said guide-tube being attached to a cross-bar 3 at the upper portion of the tube or casing 1 and the lower end attached to a cap 4 on the lower end of said tube or casing 1.
Mounted to slide in the guide-tube is a lampholding tube 5, and through this tube 5 the wires 6 for an electric lamp are designed to be passed when the device is used for suspending an electric lamp. The wires 6 pass over apulley 7, attached to a cross-bar 8 in the` upper portion of the tube l, thence downward to a connection with a movable pulley 9, and thence up and out through the rosette 10 to the line extension; .but the electric wires, if desired, may be passed through either one of the lateral openings 11 at the top of the tube or casing.
Attached to the pulley 9 is a chain 12, which passes through an opening 13 in the cap 4t and is guided by a pulley 14, arranged in the tube or casing near said opening 13, and extended downward at one side of the opening 13 is a finger 15, with which any link ot' the chain 12 maybe engaged for holding the lamp in its adjusted position. This holding-linger, however, may not be inserted in all cases. For instance, if the tube 5 is friction-tight in the tube 2 it will be held in its adjusted position by such friction; but in such instance it will be necessary to draw the lamp downward manually. It' it is desired that the lamp should fall by its own weight, a suitable weight maybe placed on the tube 5 just above the lamp. Then as this weight moves the lamp downward it must be held by engaging the chain with the finger 15. The pulley 9 is guided in its movement by a rib on the pulley-block engaging in a channel in the guidetube.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A lam p-hanger comprising a tube or casing, a lamp-supporting tube arranged to slide in the casing, electric conductors extending from an electric supply into said tube, a pulley in the upper portion of the casing and over which the conductors pass, and means in connection with said conductors whereby a pull may be exerted on the conductors to move the tube upward, substantially as specitied.
2. Alamp-hanger, comprisingatube or casing, aguide-tube arranged in said tube or casing and rigidly connected therewith, a tube mounted to slide in the guide-tube and adapted to support a lamp, electric wires secured at the upper portion of the hanger and passing through said supporting-tube, a pulley arranged in the upper portion of the tube or casing and over which said Wires pass, a loose pulley around which the wires pass, and a chain or the like attached to said loose pulley and passing through an opening in the lower cap of the tube or casing, substantially as specified.
3. Alamp-hanger, comprisinga tube or casinghaving an openingat its upperendthrough which wires may pass, a guide-tube arranged in the casing, a cap on the lower end of the casing with which said guide -tube is connected, the said cap having an opening, a finger extended downward at one side of said opening, a roller in the casing above the opening, a tube mounted to slide in the guidetube, electric wires secured at the upper por- ICO tion of the hanger and extended through said sliding tube, a'pulley arranged in the upper portion of the casing and over which the Wires pass, a loose pulley around which the Wires pass, and a chain attached to said loose pulley and 'extended through the opening in the cap, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HERBERT L. WHITE.
