To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK W. TULLY, of Flushing, borough of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Package-Ties, which is fully set forth in the following specification, taken in connection With the drawings which form a part thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a detail plan View of my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation showing the tongues; Fig. 3, a viewof the underside, showing tongues fastened to tag; Fig. 4, the fastener as applied to a package; and Fig. 5 is a detailsectional view on line was of Fig. at, illustrating the manner of cutting the metal of the fasteners to form knife-edges thereon before the tongues are bent outwardly.

My invention relates to package or box ties or fasteners, of tin or other suitable material, where a cord is to be used in combination therewith; and it consists in the novel construction of the tie or fastener, which permits of the fastening of a package or box after the same has been bound with cord without the necessity of knotting the cord, and also in providing for the severing of the cord after the package or box has been fastened, as more fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, A represents a tie or fastener consisting of a circular piece of tin or other suitable material, slightly concaved, into which are stamped or cut the tongues a and a, thus providing notches b and b in the circular piece of tin A, said tongues a and a and notches b and I) being stamped or cut in such a manner that their resultant edges will have a knife or saw edge, as shown in Fig. 5.

cient thickness to permit of said tie or fastener being clenched thereon.

In operation the end of the cord is first drawn under the edge of the tie or fastener A and between it and the outer surface of the box-cover ortag when the latter is used, where it is retained by the pressure of the inner center surface of the fastener and box or tag. The cord is then wound once about the box or package lengthwise or about its width, as the operator desires, and back to the tie or fastener, where the cord is again drawn under the edge of the tie or fastener A, and then around the base of said tie or fastener until at right angles to the former winding, when said cord is again passed around the box or package and back to the tie or fastener, under which it is again drawn and wound around the base thereof, and then into the notch b or b and along the sharp edge thereof, thus severing the cord from the ball or reel in a wellknown manner.

It will be seen that said fastener A maybe of any shape desirable other than circular, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. A package tie or fastener, consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material haviugaconvex bearingsurface and a notch in the edge thereof provided with cutting edges, substantially as described.

2. A package tie or fastener, consisting of a plate of metal or other suitable material having a convex bearing-surface, tongues integral with said plate near the center thereof and adapted to project at right angles outwardly from the convex surface thereof, and a notch in said plate provided with cutting edges, substantially as described.

3. A package tie or fastener comprising a tag, a plate of metal or other suitable material having a convex surface adapted to bear against the surface of the tag, means for fastening the plate to the tag, and a cutting edge associated with said metallic plate, substantially as described.
