OIL LAMP.
(Application filed Nov. 24, 1900.)
DUOOOOOOOODOOOOOCIOO INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT @rrIcE,
JULIO GUIMARAES, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
OIL-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 684,636, dated October 15, 1901. Application filed November 24, 1900. Serial No. 37,601. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIO GUIMARAEs, a citizen of Argentina, residing in Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in petroleum or other oil lamps; and the object of the invention is to improve the construction of such lamp so that a powerful white flame, similar to that produced by an incandescent burner, is obtained, however, without the use of an incandescing mantle.
For this purpose the invention consists in the combination of an oil-reservoir having a conical bottom, a hollow foot supporting said bottom, and having two series of openings for admitting air thereto, a draft-tube extending upwardly from the upper open end of said conical bottom, a flame-deflector supported above the draft-tube, a burner-body supported on the oil-reservoir and provided with perforations, a gallery supported on the burner-body, a cap supported on the burner and adapted to cover the lower blue portion of the flame, a globe supported on the gallery, said gallery having perforations for admitting air into the globe above the cap, a chimney', and a ring secured to said chimney and resting upon said globe, the lower end of said chimney being flared and located above said flame-deflector and cap, and said ring being provided with perforations for admitting air into the top of the globe.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, partly in elevation and partly in section, a lamp constructed according to my invention.
The lamp shown comprises an oil-reservoir 1 a, which has a conical bottom b, which is supported by a foot 0 of the lamp. From the smaller upper end of the conical bottom Z2 extends in upward direction a draft-tube d, which serves not only as a draft-tube, but also as an interior guide for the wick. Upon the perforated shell e of the burner is located the gallery f, and upon the latter is supported the globe g, preferably made of glass. The chimney 7t passes through the opening at the top of the globe g and is supported centrally in the globe by means of a perforated ring i, which is frictionally or otherwise secured to the chimney 7t and rests upon the globe g, or the chimney may be supported by any other suitable means upon the globe g, so that its lower end is located above the flame-deflector, cap 25, and draft-tube. The capi is supported on the burner and extends upward in such a manner as to cover the lower blue portion of the flame l, (indicated by dotted lines,) so that the same is not exposed to view. The chimney 7c is preferably provided at its lower end with a flaring rim, as shown, so as to receive the flame and draw the same into the chimney after it has been deflected outwardly by the flame-deflector.
The flame Z receives a supply of air from four diderent sources, first, through the openings at and 0 in the foot of the lamp; second, through the openings to in the body e of the burner; third, through the openingsp in the bottom of the burner-galleryf, and, fourth, through the openings q in the ring '5 at the top of the lamp-globe. By the arrangement of these openings and the conical form of the bottom I) of the oil-receptacle an extremely powerful draft of air is insured. The air entering at m and 0 is compressed, owing to the conical form of the bottom of the oil-reservoir, and is carried upward through the draft-tube (Z. By the air entering the openings 19 and g, which are arranged opposite one another, respectively, below and above the frame, counterdrafts are created in the globe, which, on the one hand, serve to cool the globe, which is necessary, owing to the great heat of the flame, and,on the other hand, serve to supply the flame above the capt with the large amount of air which is necessary for perfect combustion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In an oil-lamp, the combination of an oilreservoir having a conical bottom, a hollow foot supporting said reservoir and having two series of openings for admitting air below the conical bottom, a draft-tube extending upwardly from the upper open end of said conical bottom, a flame-deflector supported above the draft-tube, a burner-body supported on the oil-reservoir and provided with a gallery supported on the perforations,
10 provided with perforations for admitting air into the top of the globe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIO GU'IMARAES,
Witnesses WOLDEMAR HAUPT, HENRY HASPER.
