BEST AVA'lLABlZE COP UNITED STATES: PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. VAN WORMER, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, AssIeNoR'oF' ONE-HALF TO J. FRANK BECK, OF SAME PLACE.
NESTABLE FfAPE Box.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 680,186, dated August 6, 1901. Application filed March 1, 1900. :Serial N 0. 6,890. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. VAN WORMER, a citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made a certain new and useful Improvement in Foldable Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadin its lid when not in use, so as to take up but a minimum amount of space.
The invention also consists in the combination of two of the folded boxes with their lids, the folded boxes being snugly packed in one of the lids and the other lid being placed over that containing the boxes, so as to efiectually exclude dust from the boxes, which is an important advantage, especially when the boxes are to be used to hold fine hats and other articles of millinery.
With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved boxes as it appears when unfolded or set up ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan view illustrative of the manner of folding the box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box as it appears when folded or collapsed,
and Fig. dis a sectional view illustrating two i of the boxes as they appear whenpacked in 1 the case formed by their lids.
Referring by letter to the said drawings,
and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 thereof, A is my improved box. This box in the preferred embodiment of the invention is made of pasteboard and comprises a bottom wall at,
having a diagonal bend or hinge 11, whereby it is adaptedto fold upwardly after the 1113 11 ner shown in Fig. 2, side walls 0 c, connec in a hinged manner to opposite edges of bottom wall, so as to enable them to fol wardly toward and assume positions pa to the halves of the bottom wall whet box is folded, and side walls (1 d, the edges of which are connected in a hi, manner to opposite edges of. the bot* .while their vertical edges are connected hinged manner to the adjacent vertical of the side walls 0. The said side wall differ from the side walls 0 in that the provided with inclined bends or hi whereby they are adapted to fold upon selves incident to the folding of the As will be readily observed by refere' Fig. 1, the inclined bond or hinge e of one of the side walls d extends from one lower corner of the box to the upper edge of said side wall, while the bend or hinge e of the other side wall 11 extends from the opposite lower corner of the box to the upper edge of thewall also, that the upper ends of the bends q located at a distance from the adjacent. ners of the box about equal to one-fouri. the length of the upper edges of the walls a. This peculiar disposition of the bends e is advantageous, because the box when folded or collapsed, as shown in Fig. 3, is the same in rectangular outline as when it is unfolded and set up ready for use, as shown in Fig. 1, and also because when the box is folded a recess f is afforded in one corner, which enables the operator to readily grasp the ,box and facilitates the operation of opening the same into the position shown in Fig. 1 and also fa cilitates removal of the folded box from its lid.- It follows from the construction described in the foregoing that the improved box has four horizontal hinges, four vertical hinges, a diagonal hinge in its bottom wall, and inclined hinges in two opposite side walls; also, I that when the box is folded the halves of the bottom wall are adaptedto meet fiat'wise, and the portions of the side walls d separated by the hinges e are adapted to fold inwardly upon themselves and be received between the halves of the bottom wall and the side walls 0, which when the box is folded, as shown in Fig. 3, rest parallel to the said halves of the bottom. This being so, the box when folded,
is quite flat and is not liable to be casually opened.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings two of my improved boxes A are shown as superposed in the lid B of one of the boxes, and the lid C of the other box, which is slightly larger than the lid B, is shown as arranged over the said lid B. From this it follows that the two lids form a case which effectually prevents dust and the like from reaching the boxes, which is particularly advantageous when the boxes are to be used to hold delicate articles; also, that the arrangement of the two boxes and their complementary lids is a very compact one, and consequently the whole combination f the two boxes and two lids takes up buta mum amount of space.
Jen it is desired to use the boxes shown 7. 4 and their complementary lids, the or has but to remove the lid C from lid take the boxes out of lid B and unfold ind then place the lids on the unfolded en the boxes are unfolded orset up ready they are not liable to casually fold or collapse, and when their lids are in position they are efiectually prevented from doing so.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that while my improved box is adapted when not in use to be compactly folded, so as to take up but a minimum amount of space, it is as serviceable when unfolded or set up as the ordinary box having side walls rigidly connected together and to a bottom wall.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The superposed folded boxes described, in combination with the lid of one box in which the said superposed boxes are contained, and the lid of the other box arranged over the first-named lid, whereby two complete closed boxes substantiallyidenticalinsize, shape and construction may be arranged to be shipped in the form of one single box substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto alfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. VAN WORMER.
