UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS EDUARD WHITE, OF. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VARIABLE M EASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,325, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed February 26, 1901. Serial No. 48,901. (No model.)
.for difierent quantities, making it particularly useful for hucksters or peddlers for measuring fruit, vegetables, or the like, although it may be used as a grain-measure.
I will describe a variable measure embody iug myinvention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a measure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4. of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the measure, which may be made-of any suitable material-such, forinstance, as woodand it is here shown as cylindrical. Employed in the measure is an adj nstablebottom 2, consisting of sheet metal and adapted to be moved through anyone of a series of openings 3, formed in the body. These openings extend one-half the circumference of the body, and the diameter of the bottom, that engages in an opening when the said bottom is in place, is sufficiently large to extend out to the outer surface of the body, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. The bottom is provided with a finger-piece 4E and is held in position by means of an. arm 5, mounted to swing on the body.
When the bottom is adjusted in an opening, the openings above it must be closed. For this purpose I employ stops, consisting of segmental plates 6, designed'to fit in the openings, and at their central portions these stops are provided with finger-pieces 7, to be en gaged by an arm 5 to hold them in position. The stops are prevented from lateral movement by means of lugs S attheir ends, which engage against the outer side of the body.
In use for a small amountsuch, for instance, as a quart-the removable bottom is to be placed through the upper opening, and of course by moving it to lower positions the measure will be increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A measure, comprising a body having a series of openings through its wall, a bottom movable into any one of said openings and having a finger-piece at its outer edge, and arms mounted to swing on the body to hold the bottom in its adjusted position, substantially as specified.
2. A measure, comprising a body having a series of openings through its wall, a bottom movable through any one of said openings, and segmental stops for the openings, substantially as specified.
3. A measure comprising a body having a series of openings through its wall, 'a bottom movable through any one of said openings, and stops for the openings, consisting of segmental plates having lugs at the ends for engaging against the outer surface of the body,
substantially as specified.
4:. A measure, comprising a body having a series of slots through its wall, the said slots extending one-half the circumference of the body, a bottom movable through any one of said slots, segmental stop-plates for the slots, the said stop-plates having lugs at their ends for engaging against the outer surface of the body and having finger-pieces, and devices on the body forholding the bottom and stops in place, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
