NITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM THEODORE GREGG, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
DOUCHE-BENCH.
SPECFIEGATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 668,636, dated February 26, 1901 Serial No. 18,857. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM THEoDoRr. GREGG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Douche-Bench,A
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means on which a woman may recline while douching the vagina and with the help of which the parts may be properly disposed for the application of the douche.
It is well known to the medical profession that women are quite unable properly to douche the vagina without disposing the parts in certain positions which alone facilitate the application of the douche. Heretofore great difficulty has been experienced in this counection, and by my invention means are provided on which the woman may comfortably rest and which enforce her to take the position necessary to the douche without inconvenience of any sort.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in inactive position, showing its adaptability as a seat or hassock. Fig. 2 is a sectional view particularly to illustrate the footrests. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan view showing the draining-pan. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the appliance open for use as a douche-bench.
The device has a rectangular frame or body a, sustained on legs a/and when not in use the top may be tted with a cushion b, (see Fig. 1,) thus adapting the device as a seat or hassock. It is pointed out that when the device is in this adjustment its identity is in every way concealed, and at the same time a thoroughly-serviceable seat for the bedroom is aorded.
The frame a has a partial top c, arranged rigidly in place and covering approximately (See Fig. 4.) In
two-thirds of the same.
this top .is formed an' opening c', beneath which is placed acentrally-oriiced drain-pan d, removably held in place by clips d. (See Fig. Two foot-rests care arranged at the foot of the bench and are pivotally mounted on the adjacent end of the bench. (See Fig. 2.) When in active position, as shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, these rests e bear against the sides of the frame a, whereby their downward movement is limited. Whenthrown inward to inactive position, the rests e are held by a cleat e, fastened to the inside'of the foot'of the bench, (see dotted lines, Fig. 2,) in which position the foot-rests lie below the top c. Hinged on a stationary cleat f at the end of the top c, opposite the foot-rests e, is a lidf, which is capable of folding down to the inactive position flat on the top c, (see Fig. 1,) or of swinging outward to the active position. (See Figs. 4 and 5.) The free end of the lid f comes in direct proximity to the foot of the frame awhen the lid is folded, and therefore covers and conceals the footrests e, which should then be folded down, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. When in active position, the lid f rests on the upper extremity of the head' of the frame ct, and is thereby held in inclined position, so that it may serve as aback-rest for the woman, who should recline with her posterior on the pan c. Forward of the top c the bench is fitted with end and bottom walls, forming, with the adjacent walls of the frame a, a chamber g, which is fitted with a closure g', hinged on the cleat f'. This chamber is used to contain the douching instruments. In connection with the closure g it is pointed out that when thrown down it lies level with the cleat f' and top c and that these three parts form a perfectly level surface for the cushion' b.
In using the invention the lid f is thrown ont, as shown in Fig. 4, and the foot-rests also are placed in active position. The woman should then seat herself upon the pan d with her back resting on the lid f. Then byplacing her feet on the rests e her legs will-be thrown open and a perfect douching position will be assumed. The woman may give the douche herself without the help of any one. The liquid used in the douche will drain into the pan d and may pass therefrom into any suitable receptacle placed below.
IOO
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A douche-bench, having a frame which comprises an essentially horizontal top with an opening therein, a lid carried on the frame and situate contiguous to the top at one end thereof, the frame comprising means for holding the lid in slightly-inclined position, the lid and top furnishing a support on which the patient may recline, and foot-rests located at the end of the top opposite the lid and respectively at the sides of the bench, the foot-rests being pivoted to swing transversely in and out of active position and serving to hold the knees of the patient bent and the legs apart, for the purpose specified.
2. Adouche-bench havinga frame comprising an essentially horizontal top with an opening therein, the top extending partly over the frame and also comprising an upwardly-eX- tended head portion, a lid hingedly mounted at one end of the top to cover the same and also to swing out into engagement with said head portion of the frame, whereby the lid is held inclined, and foot-rests pivotally mounted on the frame at the end of the top opposite the lid, and respectively at the sides of the frame, the foot-rests swinging transversely in and out of operative position and lying when out of active position below the fop so as to be covered by the lid when folded.
3. A douche-bench, having a frame comprising a top partly covering the frame, heads projected up above the top, Walls forming a chamber at one end of the top, and a closure for the said chamber, a lid hingedly mounted adjacent to the closure for the chamber and capable of folding down on the top andalso of extending ont in inclined position against one of the heads of the frame over the closure for the chamber, and foot-rests pivoted at the opposite end of the top and swinging transversely to positions outward from the frame and to inward positions below the top and under the lid when folded.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM THEODORE GREGG.
