UNlTED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF-ONE-HALF TO THE DAYTON FOLDING BOX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PAPER PAIL.
D'PECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,634, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed February 16,1900. Serial No. 5,433. (No model.)
To all 1071/0172, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. WV. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomg ery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Pails, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a paper pail primarily adapted for berries.
to One object of my invention is to make a pail or bucket from a single blank, which has an arched bot-tom.
Another object of my invention is to provide a self-closing sectional lid.
25 Other objects and features will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a blank from which the pail is made. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the completed pail. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section from that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the bottom.
A represents the blank from which the pail is made. The sections a a form the body portion of the pail, which is preferably of taper cylindrical form when set up, as shown in Fig. 2.
Z) represents the portion forming the bottom section of the pail. In order to line the bottom with extra thickness of material, I provide flaps c c 0 0 d represents the scored lines on which said flaps are folded. In or- 5 der that the bottom may be of arch form, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, circular scored lines 6 mark the boundary and the circular corner between the bottom and body portion of the pail.
It will be observed that the left-hand section at f extends beyond the edge of the opposite section, and on the opposite side of the sections at g shows an extension beyond its opposing section. This represents the amount 5 of lap of each semitubular section upon its opposite section and secures a double lapping of the flaps c c and 0 0 making a firm bottom.
It is very important in berry-pails made from paper to have a very firm and durable bottom, as the juice of berries is expressed more or less in the pails and trickles down and permeates the paper, often causing the bottom to drop out when the pail is lifted. By making the bottom of the curved or arched form here shown and by the overlapping of the flaps I obtain a much stronger bottom.
The pail rests upon the crowning edges h and the weight of the pail and berries is sustained at the edges, which are Very rigid, owing to the superimposedfolds. This form also allows the air to pass freely through the arch, and the bottom tier of berries in the pail is not subject to pressure, as in flat-bottom pails.
In order to make a self-closing cover, I provide the flaps G0, which are formed by providing scored lines it. These flaps are extended, as at m n, so that they will, when folded in, form an overlapping curved sectional cover, which is also a feature of my in 70 vention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A blank for berry-pail consisting of an intermediate narrowed bottom-section, bodysections extended from two of the opposite sides thereof, determined by curved, scored, lines, one or more of said body-sections having lateral extensions adapted to overlap on the sides of the pail when the blank is folded, substantially as specified.
2. A blank for berry-pail consisting of an intermediate narrowed bo ttom-section, bodysections extended from two of the opposite edges thereof, determined by oppositely-dis posed, transverse, curved, scored lines, one or more of said body-sections having lateral extensions unbroken longitudinally, adapted, when the blank is folded along said scored lines, to present two overlapping edges upon the sides of the pail, substantially as specified.
3. A blank for berry-pail consisting of an intermediate narrowed botto1n-section,bodysections extended from two of the opposite sides thereof, determined by curved, scored lines, one or more of said body-sections having lateral extensions unbroken longitudinally, adapted, when the blank is folded on said scored lines, to present two overlapping IOO edges upon the sides of the pail, and a cover formed at the end ofone or more of the bodysections and determined by curved, scored lines, substantially as specified.
4. A blank for berry-pail consisting of an intermediate narrowed bottom-section, bodysections extended from two of the opposite edges thereof, having lateral extensions, unbroken longitudinally, adapted to overlap when the pail is formed, oppositelydisposed, transverse, curved, scored lines between the bottom and body sections, transverse lines continued across said extensions, forming reinforcing bottom-flaps, whereby when the blank is folded, a tubular arched bottom receptacle is formed, substantially as specified.
5. A blank for berry-pail consisting of an intermediate narrowed bottom-section, bodysections extended from two of the opposite sides thereof, having lateral extensions, unbroken longitudinally adapted to overlap when the pail is formed, oppositely-disposed, curved, scored lines between the bottom and body sections, transverse, scored lines continued across said extensions forming reinforcing bottom-flaps, a cover formed at the outer end of one or more of said body-sections and determined by transverse, curved, scored lines, substantially as specified.
6. A blank for a paper pail composed of sections a, a, b, and the flap extensions 0, c, c and the circular scored lines e determining the bottom and body boundary-lines, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT. Witnesses:
