To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Heurico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Pencils; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to a safety attachment for pencils.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be attached to the end of the pencil in any suitable manner, but preferably by connecting it with the eraser-tip and then connecting the tip with the pencil, and by the employment of which the pencil may be securely engaged with the lining of a pocket and be prevented from accidental or surreptitious removal, but permitting of the ready removal of the pencil when the same is properly manipulated.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a pencil embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the pencil. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View through the tip, and Fig. etis an enlarged View of the attachment removed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the pencil, 2 the tip, of the usual or any approved construction, and 3 the eraser fitted in the tip.

4 denotes the attachment, preferably made of spring metal and is preferably inserted through thetip and the eraser and hasits ends projected from the side of the tip in a plane at right angles to the axis of the pencil, said ends being curved about the pencil in the same direction and pointed. To augment this, I may provide the tip with a groove 5, in which are seated portions of the curved ends, the extremities, however, projecting laterally sufficiently far to. enable them to be caught or engaged with the lining of the pocket.

While this is the preferred construction, I do not wish to be limited thereto, for I contemplate as falling within the scope of my invention any means for securing the attachment to the pencil.

In practice in inserting the pencil into the pocket the pencil is given a slight twist in a direction opposite to that in which the points of the attachment project, thus permitting the pencil to freely enter the pocket. After it has been inserted the pencil is given aslight twist in the opposite direction. This causes the points to enter the lining of the pocket, and in this position the pencil is securely retained. To withdraw the pencil from the pocket, it is given a slight twist in a direction opposite to that last described, thus freeing the attachment from the lining of the pocket and permitting the ready removal of the pencil.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.

The device is exceedingly useful for the purpose for which it is designed and may be placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a pencil,ofasafety attachment connected thereto and consisting of a pointed prong which projects laterally from the pencil in a plane at right angles to its axis and is curved partially about the same, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination with a pencil,ofasafety attachment connected thereto and consisting of prongs which project from the opposite sides of the pencil at right angles to its axis and are curved in the same direction about the pencil, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination with a pencil-tip, of prongs projecting laterally therefrom in a 5.
