To (M17, whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHERMAN W. WATTER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Flooring and Metal Ceiling Combined, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates principally to the construction of floors and ceilings in fireproof buildings; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient construction of fireproof flooring in which, if desired, the under surface of the fioor may be used for a ceiling.
My invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a partial plan view of my improved floor construction. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view parallel to the I-beams and showing part of an I-beam exposed. Fig. 4. is a partial perspective view of the metal sheet which is supported by the anchor-Ts. Fig. 5 is a view of the face-plate. Fig. 6 is a partial perspective View of the clamping-sheet used for holding the lower end of the faceplate.
Like characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
As shown in the drawings, the floor is supported by I-beams A, placed at the desired distance apart. Resting upon the I-beams A, ata suitable distance apart, are anchor-Ts B or other form of transverse bars. The anchor-Ts are preferably constructed as shown in the drawings, having flange 1 and standing web 2. At each end of the anchor-T the standing web of the same is cut away, and the end is bent, as shown in the drawings, so as to fit around and clasp. the upper flange of the I-beam. If desired, the anchor-T or other form of transverse bar may be supported by the I-beams from above, in which case the bent ends of the transverse bar would engage the lower flange of the I-beams. Resting upon the anchor-Ts are metallic sheets 0. The sheets O are preferably provided with parallel longitudinal grooves d,which fit upon the standingwebs of the anchor-Ts, as shown in the drawings, the groove of one metallic sheet lapping over the groove of another, as shown in Fig. 3. If desired, the metal sheets 0 maybe constructed of wire-netting instead of solid metal, as shown in the drawings. On top of the metal sheets 0 is placed concrete D orother fireproof material. Over the concrete is placed a floor E of any desired construction.
Where it is desired to protect the I-beams of the fioor by fireproof material, the I-beam is inclosed by a face-plate F and clampingsheet G. Where the I-beam is so inclosed, the end of the metallic sheet O is provided with a flange 3, which engages a flange 4 of the face-plate F, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower edge of the face-plate is also flanged and is connected with. the flanged clampingsheet G, as shown in Fig. 2. The face-plate F may be cut out, as shown at 6 in Fig. 5, so that the same will fit properly around the anchor-Ts when in engagement with the metallic sheets 0. After the I-beam is inclosed by the face-plates F and clamping-sheets G concrete or other fireproof material is filled in between the face-plate and I-beam, as shown in Fig. :3.
Between the end of each anchor-T and the I-beam may be placed a key-wedge H, which may be used to hold the anchor-T firmly in place and to tighten up and adjust the anchor- Ts, so as to render the bottom of the floor perfectly level.
If desired, a set-screw or other suitable means may be substituted for the key-wedge H for adjusting the anchor-Ts.
In the floor constructed as above described the bottom of the sheets 0 and anchor-Ts B and the face plates F and clam ping-sheets G form a ceiling constructed entirely of metal. 0
The sheets 0 orface-plates F, or both, may be corrugated or otherwise formed, so as to render the ceiling ornamental, or the sheets 0 andv face-plates may be so constructed as to form metal lat-hs, which will render the 5 ceiling suitable to be plastered.
Where it is desired to have the I-beams exposed, the face'plates and clamping-sheets may be omitted, in which case the metallic sheets 0 would be extended over the I-beams.
While in the drawings the flooring is shown as supported by I-beams, any other form of beam may be used to support the flooring, and the floor-supporting beams may be constructed of wood or metal, and any other form of transverse bars may be substituted for the anchor-Ts to support the metallic sheets 0, and the metallic sheets 0 may be placed under the anchor-Ts and supported by the anehor-Ts from above. While I prefer to attach the anchor-Ts to the floor-supporting beams, as shown in the drawings, I do not wish to limit my invention to this manner of attaching the two parts together, as it is manifest that the transverse bars may be attached to the floor-supportingbeams in many other ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a floor, in combination, floor-supporting beams, transverse bars supported by the floor supporting beams and having ends turned so as to engage the floor-supporting beams, metallic sheets resting on the transverse bars, an upper flooring, and fireproof material interposed between the metallic sheets and upper flooring, substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
2.- In a floor and ceiling, in combination, floor-supporting beams, transverse bars supported by the floor-supporting beams and having ends turned so as to engage the floorsupporting beams, metallic sheets having longitudinal grooves resting on the transverse bars, an upper flooring, and fireproof material interposed between the metallic sheets and upper flooring, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In a floor, in combination, floor-supporting beams, transverse bars resting thereon and having ends bent around to engage the supporting-beams,key-wedges interposed between the bent ends of the transverse bars and the floor-supporting beams, metallic sheets support-ed by the transverse bars, an upper flooring, and fireproof material interposed between the metallic sheets and upper flooring substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
4. In a floor and ceiling, in combination,
I-beams, anchor-Ts resting upon the I-beams and having ends hooked around the upper flange of the I-beams, metallic sheets resting upon the anchor -Ts, an upper flooring, and fireproof material interposed between the metallic sheets and upper flooring, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a floor and ceiling, in combination, I-beams, anchor-Ts resting upon the I-beams and having ends hooked around the upper flange of the I-beams, means for adjustingthe anchor-Ts to the I-beams, metallic sheets resting upon the anchor -Ts, an upper flooring, fireproof material interposed between the metallic sheets and upper flooring, substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
63. In a ceiling, in combination, floor-supporting beams, inclosed by face-plates F and clamping-sheets G, transverse bars resting upon the supporting-beams, metallic sheets resting upon the transverse bars, substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
7. Ina flooring, in combination, I-beams inclosed by face-plates F and clam ping-sheets G, anchor --Ts resting upon the I-beams, metallic sheets resting upon the anchor-Ts and provided with overlapping longitudinal grooves and being connected with the faceplates F, an upper flooring, fireproof material interposed between the lace-plate F and I-beam, and between the outer flooring and metallic sheets, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a floor and ceiling, in combination, floor-supporting beams, transverse bars supported thereby and having ends attached to the floor-supporting beams, metallic sheets having longitudinal grooves resting on the transverse bars and overlapping each other, an upper flooring, fireproof material interposed between the metallic sheets and upper flooring, substantially as shown and described.
