SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,182, dated December 4, 1900. Application filed July 1, 1899. Serial No. 722,591. (No model-l To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON MILTIADES MESSI- NESI, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vvoodworking Machinery, (for whichI have applied fora patentin Great Britain, No. 11,164c, dated May 29, 1899,) of which the followingis aspecification.
This invention relates to apparatus for sawing, planing, drilling, turning, and otherwise working Wood.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of apparatus made according to the invention. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the apparatus, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the lower part of the apparatus.
a is the frame or support of the apparatus, the said frame being provided with an upper horizontal arm a. The lower or main portion of the frame carries a table consisting of the bed-plate b, on which slides the frame I), and of the auxiliary frame 0, which is pivoted at c to the frame 17, so as to swing in a vertical plane, and of the table proper, d, which is adapted to slide horizontally in a direction at right angles to that in which the frame I) slides on the bed-plate b. The frame I) is adjusted in height by means of the rack 19 and the pinion b mounted upon the spindle b andadapted to be operated by the wormwheel 19 and worm I), mounted upon the spindle b the latter having a squared end to receive an operating-handle.
To operate the frame 17', a screw 6 is provided, which is fixed in lugse e on the frame b and engages an internally-screw-threaded bevel-wheel f, gearing with a bevel-wheel f, keyed upon a spindle f mounted in a bearing secured to the frame 19, the said bevel- Wheel f being retained in position by a lug f secured to the frame I), so that by rotating the spindle f the bevel-wheel f rotates the bevel-wheel f, thereby feeding the sliding table in either direction, as desired.
To adjust the table to any desired inclination, the following arrangement is made use of-that is to say, one side of the said auxiliary frame has fitted to it a toothed sector 0 with which gears a worm 0 mounted upon a frame 0. replaced by spindle 0 adapted to be'operatod by hand through the medium of the bevel-wheel 0 upon the said spindle,which bevel-wheel gears with a second bevel-wheel a, mounted upon a spindle 0 supported in a hearing 0 on the sliding frame I) and adapted to be rotated by a suitable handle which can be fitted upon its squared end. The center of the sector 0 coincides with the axis 0, around which the auxiliary frame 0 swings. With this arrange ment it will be obvious that by turning the wormspindle c the sector 0 is rotated, thereby turning the work-table proper, cl, to the desired position.
To enable the auxiliary frame 0 to be clamped in any position to which it may be adjusted, the toothed sector a has a curved slot c formed in it, (the curve having the pivot c as a center,) and a rod 9 is passed through the said slot, the said rod 9 extendin g through the apparatus to the other side of the table and through a slot in a similar but untoothed sectorg, attached to the other side of the table. The end projecting through the sector g is provided with a head g and the other end is screw-threaded so as to receive a screw-threaded nut or handle g which when tightened upon the said screw-thread securely holds the table in the position to which it may be adjusted.

With this arrangement of two tool-spindles arranged one above the other it is possible to submit work to two successive operationssuch, for example, as sawing and grooving-by first raising the work-table set at the required angle, so that the work is cut by the saw mounted upo'n'the upper spindle, and then simply lowering the said table (Without altering its angle) to enable the work to be grooved (or v otherwise treated) by the tool upon the lower 'paratus.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said inven tion and in what manner the same is to be performed, .I declare that what I claim is 1. In a woodworking apparatus, the combination withthe main su ppor-t,ofa bed-plate, means for vertically adjusting said bed-plate, a sliding frame mounted on said bed-plate, means for horizon tally adjusting said sliding frame, an auxiliary frame swiveled to the forward part of said sliding frame, means for adjusting said auxiliary frame, a table upon said auxiliary frame, means for adjusting said table, a forwardly-extending arm int-egral with said support, a spindle mounted in the vertical portion, of said arm, means for operating said spindle, a spindle mounted in the forwardly-extendinghorizontal portion of said arm and means for operating said spindle, a fret-saw and means for operating said saw, substantially as described.
2. In a-Woodworking apparatus, the combination with the main support, of a bed-plate, means for vertically adjusting said bed-plate, a sliding frame mounted on said bed-plate, means for horizontally adjusting said sliding frame, an auxiliary frame swiveled to the forward part of-said slidingframe, means for adjusting said auxiliary :frame, a table upon said auxiliary frame, means for adjusting said table, a forwardly-extending arm integral with said support, a spindle mounted in the vertical portion of said arm, means for operatingsaid spindle, a spindle mounted in theforWardly-extending horizontal portion of said arm and means for operatingsaid spindle, a-fret-saw, means for reciprocating said saw and 'means for throwing said reciprocating device into and out of engagement with the driving mechanism, substantially as described.
3. In a'woodworking apparatus, the combination with the main support, of a bed-plate, means for verticallyadjusting said bed-plate, a sliding frame mounted on said bed-plate, means for horizontally adjusting said sliding frame, an auxiliary frame swiveled to the'forward part of said sliding frame, means for adjusting said auxiliary frame, a table uponsaid auxiliary frame, means for adjusting 7 said table, a forwardly-extending arm integral with said support, a spindle mounted in the vertical portion of said arm, means for operating saidspindle, a spindle mountedin the forwardly-extendin g horizontal portion of said arm and means for operating said spindle, a fret-saw, means for reciprocating said saw and means for throwing said reciprocatingdevice into and out of frictional engagement with the driving mechanism, substantially as described.

saw, a shaft operating said reciprocating device, a bevel friction-wheel loosely keyed to said shaft, an annular collar integral with said bevel friction-Wheel and provided with an annular groove and a counterweighted pedal provided with a bifurcated arm adapted to engage said annular groove in said collar,
substantially as described.
5. In a woodworking apparatus, the combin ation with the main support, of a bed-plate, means for vertically adj usting said bed-plate, a sliding frame mounted on said bed-plate, means for horizontally adjusting said sliding frame, an auxiliary frame swiveled to the forward part of said sliding frame, means for adjusting said auxiliary frame, a tableupon said auxiliary frame, means for adjusting said table, a forwardly-extending arm integral with said support, longitudinal grooves formed on two sides of the extreme forward end of said arm adapted to receive tools, a spindle mounted in the vertical portion of said arm, means for operating said spindle, a spindle mounted in the forwardly-extending horizontal portion of said arm and means for operating said spindle, a fret-saw and means for operating said saw, substantially as described.
6. In a woodworking apparatus, the combin ation wi th themain support,of a bed-plate, means for vertically adjusting said bed-plate, a sliding frame mounted on said bed-plate, means for horizontallyadjusting said sliding frame, an auxiliary frame swiveled to the forward part of said sliding frame, means for adjusting said auxiliary frame, a table upon said auxiliary frame, means for adjusting said table, a forwardly-extending arm integral with said support, a table provided on top of said arm, a spindle mounted in the vertical portion of said arm, means for operating said spindle, a spindle mounted in the forwardly-extending horizontal portion of said arm and means for operating said spindle, a fret-saw and means for operating said saw, substantially as described.

In a woodworking apparatus, the combination with the main support, of a bed-plate provided with a downwardly-extending portion, a rack on said downwardly-extending portion, agear-wheel meshing with said rack, a worm-wheel and worm rigidly mounted on the shaft with said gear-wheel, means for operating said Worm, a sliding frame adapted to be shifted on said bed-plate, a long screw rigidly secured to said sliding frame, a pinion provided with a screw-threaded opening for engaging said long screw, means for preventing the longitudinal movement of said pinion, an operating-pinion gearing with said first-mentioned pinion, means for turning said operating-pinion, an auxiliary frame swiveled to said sliding frame, segments integral with said auxiliary frame, slots concentric with the swiveling point, a long bolt secured to the sliding frame and passing through said slots and means of tightening said bolt, a table adapted to slide on said auxiliary frame, a long screw and nut for adjusting said table, a fret-saw, a slide attached to said saw, guides for said slide, a crank-pin, a rod pivotally connected to said slide and said crank-pin, a shaft operating said crank-pin, a bevel friction-wheel loosely keyed to said shaft, a collar integral with said friction-wheel and provided with an annular groove, a counterweighted pedal provided with a bifurcated arm adapted to engage said annular groove in said collar, a bevel-Wheel on the driving-shaft to gear with said friction-Wheel, and a forwardly-extending arm integral with said support and provided with suitable tool-carrying spindles, substantially as described.
