PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR E. SHAW, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PENNSYLVANIA GLOBE GAS LIGHT COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STREET-LAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,222, dated August 21, 1900.
Application flled March 16,1900. Serial No. 8,938. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps for Welsbach and other Incandescent Street- Lights, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple, efficient, and comparatively-inexpensive hydrocarbon lamp for outdoor streetlighting purposes which shall resemble ordinary gas-lamps, and thus not detract from the uniformity of appearance in a city.
My invention comprises the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of a lamp embodying features of my invention and showing the same in normal position; and Fig. 2 is a similar View of the upper portion of the lamp, showing the dome and its globe held in elevated position clear of the mantle.
In the drawings, a is a support, and o is the base provided with a door through which the torch is inserted to light the light, and mounted on this is an ordinary type of Welsbach light and its complemental parts. Rising from the support Ct are hollow arms a and a carrying at their tops an oil tank or reservoir a. From this reservoir a is a pipe a leading to the base of the lantern, and thence to the burner. voir also is an ordinary type of sign which may be attached in any suitable manner. This completes what I may term the lamp proper and in effect the stationary or fixed portion of the same. the top of the arms a? and a and the reservoir a is an annular ornamental wreath or ring 7). Depending from this ring I) are two rods 1) and b*, which are afforded a vertical range of movement in the hollow arms a and a and have at their lower extremities springfingers b and b Forming part of the ring I) are a number of lips provided with thumb- Depending from the reser-- Normally resting upon screws for the accommodation of the globe c, and also resting upon the ring I) is an ordinary typeof dome c and wind-cap 0 which, as will be readily seen by reference to Fig. 2, constitutes what I may term the movable member of the lamp.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that if the attendant in charge wishes to replace a mantle or clean or adjust the fixture it is not necessary to resort to the elaborate means heretofore employed, but instead he need never be disturbed.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and 0bjects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A lamp comprising a support carrying the light, hollow arms rising from the support, an oil-reservoir carried by the arms, an oil connection between the reservoir and light,
a ring carrying a dome and globe, and rods attached to said ring and telescopically fitted to said arms, whereby the globe, dome and ring may be elevated to clear the light with- 5 out disturbing the oil connection, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
ARTHUR E. SHAW.
In presence of- GRACE B. HURLBUT, K. M. GILLIGAN.
