SPECIFICAATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,027, dated `August 14, 1900;

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MARTIN KUEB- LER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wausau, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Matching-Machine, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to woodworking-machines; and its object is to provide a new and improved matching-machine which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to permit of changing 'the cutters while the head is in motion, to cut narrower or wider grooves and tongues, and to allow of changing the position of the cutters to locate the groove and tongue at a different height on the board.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the body ofthe lower cutter-head section. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the lower cutter-head section, the setting-ringbeing in position. A setting-ring. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of the improvement with part broken out. Fig. 6 is a sectional sideelevation of the same on'the line 6 6 in Fig. 5,'and Fig. fisi a similar view of the same on the lline 7 7 in Fig. 5.
Ihe improved matching-.machine is provided with a cutter-head made in two sections A and B, of which the upper sectionA is secured on the upper end of a spindle C, and the lower cutter-head section B is secured on a sleeve D, having a groove D', engaging a key E on the spindle C, so that when the latter is rotated the two cutter-head sections A B rotate together; but at the same time said cutter-head sections A and Bhave independent vertical movement, one of the other to allow of cutting narrower or wider tongues or grooves and to allow of placing the cut- Fig. 4 isa perspective view of the y ters higher up or lower down, so as to locate the grooves and tongues at a diiferent height on the board.
The sleeve D is mounted to turn in abearing F, and the spindle O is mounted to turn in a bearing G, secured to a yoke H, mounted to slide vertically in guideways I', carried by the stock I, mounted to slide in the usual manner in a transverse direction on suitable stock-bars forming part of the frame of the machine, but not shown in the drawings. The eXtreme lower end of the spindle O is set onV a step H', carried by the yoke H, so that when the latter is moved up or down said spindle is carried along in the same direction. The yoke H is held vertically adjustable relatively to the stock I by means of a screw J, as is plainly shown in Fig. l, said screw being mounted to turn in a bearing H2 on the yoke I-I and screwing in a nut I2 on the stock I. The bearing F for the sleeve D is mounted to slide vertically in guideways H10, formed on the yoke H, and said bearing F is'moved in either an up or down position and held therein by a screw K, mounted to turn in a bearing H3, carried by the yoke II and screwing in a nut formed in the bearing F.
The cutter-head sections A and B are provided with bodies A' B', having on their opposite faces grooves A2 B2, respectively, engaged by cutters L L', respectively, fastened in position in the said orooves by eyebolts N N', respectively, carried bythe bodies A' B'. The cutting edges L2 L3 ofthe cutters L L are alike in shape and project beyond the peripheral surfaces of their bodies A' B', and said cutters L L are arranged alternately, as isplainly indicated in Fig. 1, so that when the two bodies A' B are moved apart then the width of the cutting-surface of the two setsof cutters is increased correspondingly to form wider grooves or tongues, according to the shape of the cutting edges. When the two heads A and B are moved toward each other into a closed position,y then the tvwocutting edges L2 L2 overlap, so that a groove is provided having a Width corresponding to the width of a cutting edge L2 or L3.
When it is desired to change the position of the cutters L L' for a wider or narrower groove or tongue, it is only necessary for the operator to screw the screw-rod K and move IOO the bearing F downward or upward, so as to move the cutter-head section B from the cutter-head section A or toward the same, aecording to the direction in which the screwrod K is turned. When it is desired to change the position of the groove or tongue on the edge of the board under treatment, then the screws .I and K are simultaneously adjusted, accordingly to move the entire cutter-head up or down for the purpose mentioned.
To set the cutters uniformly on both cutter-head sections, a ringO is employed, which nts upon the corresponding cutter-head body, (see Fig. 3,) the ange O of said ring forming a stop for the outward movement of the cutters. When the adjustment is made, the nuts of the bolts N N' are screwed up to securely lock or fasten the cutters in place on the bodies A or B.
The spindle C is provided with the usual pulley C, connected by belt with other machinery for imparting a rotary motion to the spindle, and consequently to the cutter-head sections, as previously explained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a sliding shaft, of a cutterhead formed of two sections, one section being secured to the shaft to move therewith and the other mounted to slide on the shaft but to turn therewith, cutters secured in the opposing faces of the sections and having their cutting edges projectingr beyond the peripheral surfaces of the said sections, the cutters of oneseetion being arranged alternately with the cutters of the other section so that when the sections are in a closed position the cutting edges of the cutters will overlap, means for moving the shaft endwise, and means for adjusting the sliding section on the shaft to move it closer to orfarther from the section secured.to the shaft, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with an adjustable yoke, and a spindle mounted in the yoke and movable therewith, of a cutter-head comprising two sections, each provided with cutters, one section being secured to the shaft and the other mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith but tree to slide thereon, and a bearing adjustable in the yoke and carrying the sliding cutter-head section, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a yoke, and a spindle mounted in the yoke, of a cutter-head, comprising two sections, each provided with cutters, one of the sections being secured to the spindle, a sleeve mounted to turn with the spindle but free to slide thereon, and to which the other cutter-head section is secured, a bearing mounted to slide in the yoke, and means for adjusting said bearing, substantially as described.
4. A machine of the class described, comprising a stock, a yoke mounted to slide on the stock, a screw mounted in the yoke and engaging the stock, a spindle mounted in a bearing on the yoke and having one end set in a step carried by the yoke, a cutter-head formed of two sections, each provided with cutters, the cutters of one section being arL ranged alternately with the cutters of the other section, one of the cutters being secured to the spindle, a sleeve mounted to turn with the spindle but free to slide thereon, and to which the other cutter-head section is secured, a bearing mounted to slide in the yoke and in which the said sleeve is mounted, and a screw mounted in the yoke and engaging the said bearing, substantially as described.
5. A machine of the class described, having a cutter-head made in sections each with a set of cutters, a revoluble spindle carrying one section, a sleeve for carrying the other section and mounted to slide on and to turn with the said spindle, and means for independently adjusting the said sleeve and the said spindle in the direction of theiraxes, sub stantially as shown and described.
(5. A machine of the class described, having a cutter-head made in sections each with a set of cutters, a revoluble spindle carrying one section, a sleeve for carrying the other section and mounted to slide on and to turn with the said spindle, and a bearing carrying the said sleeve and adjustable in the direction of the axis of the sleeve, substantially as shown and described.
7. A machine of the class described, comprising a vertically-adj ustable yoke carrying a bearin g and a step, a revoluble spindle journaled in the said bearing and resting on the said step, a sleeve bearing vertically adjustable on the'said yoke, a sleeve carried by the said bearing and mounted to slide on and to turn with the said spindle, and a cutter-head made in sections, one of which is secured to the spindle and the other to the said sleeve, each of said sections having a body and cutters set and fastened in grooves in the body, the cutters of one body being arranged alternately with the cutters in the other body, Substantially as shown and described.
