Be it known that I, JOHN G. MCILWRAITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Boxes for Tin- Plate, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a cheap, light, symmetrical, and per fectly-dry box for tin-plate. Such boxes have heretofore been made wholly of wood. Suitable material for the purpose is becoming scarce and expensive and when of suitable thickness adds to the bulk and weight of the packages considerably. Such boxes must be perfectly dry, and consequently tin plate manufacturers, as well as box manufacturers. are obliged to carry a very large stock on hand in order to insure a supply at all times of the proper quality, and this in itself requires large buildings for store-rooms. I have found it possible to produce a waterproofed pulp-board which while comparatively very thin is sufficiently strong for the purpose and is of much less bulk and weight than any Wood suitable for the purpose, and I have succeeded by means of my invention in producing a box the sides of which are composed of this materialand which is both better and less expensive than boxes composed wholly of Wood. While as this material when man ufactured is always perfectly dry, such boxes possess the additional advantage of requiring less storage-room to keep an ample supply on hand.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar characters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying my present invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same as seen from the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1.

The sides and ends of the box are composed of wooden strips 1 and are nailed together at the corners. The tops and bottoms 2 are composed of pulp-board, as above described, of a very tough and strong quality, but comparatively thin, and are nailed to the strips 1. Reinforcing-strips 3 are provided, as

shown, extending along the greater portion of the length of each edge of the box, and these serve to receive the heads of the nails 4, as best shown in Fig. 2, thus reducing the direct strain on the top and bottom 2. Said strips may also serve to separate the boxes slightly, so that they may be more easily handled. As shown in Fig. 2, the internal diameter of the box is somewhat greater than the width or length of the sheets of tin-plate T, so that the sheets may be inserted and removed readily. As such packages are very heavy, a common method of breaking them open is to dash them to the ground instead of using a tool for withdrawing the nails. An advantage in the use of this material is that a knife-blade can be inserted and the top or bottom slit around the inner edge of the box quickly and neatly, and the material so cut out can be again used for box-making or other purposes. If desired, also, the tops of boxes may either be made of one-piece perforated material or made of two or more pieces with a space between, so that suitable ventilation may be provided. Such ventilating-holes are shown in the top in Fig. 1.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A packing-box for tin-plate the sides and ends whereof are composed entirely of thick wooden pieces, secured together at the corners of the box where they meet, and the top and bottom whereof are composed of thin pulp-board adapted to be easily cut and of a size to extend over the edges of said side and end pieces, to which they are nailed, the reinforcing-strips 3 being provided outside of 7 said pulp-boards near the edges to receive and support the nails, whereby a light, and at the same time strong and serviceable box for the purpose 'is provided, substantially as set forth.
