Be iin-known that I, HUGH IWI. GIBSON, of Grand Rapidg'dn the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Stump-Extractors; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being,` had to the accompanying drawingfys, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, which. make a part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective of my machine. .Y i
The frame consists of ground-sills F, uprights G, strengthened by braces H and uprights M and N. The nprights M and N are bound by ties to the cap-piece that unites the two nprights G. D represents a roller with a ratchet-wheel, K, adjusted near each end, the roller D being pivoted in the nprights G, and having two strong staples driven in, to which chains can be fastened, for embracing a stump. On each side of ratchetwheel K is an arm, C, which is furnished with an iron strap at its inner end, the said strap being made to pass around roller D, and then strongly bolted to the arm C. Between the two arms C is placed the pawl O, which works on a bolt, which penetrates the said arms near their outer end. B represents two strong metal plates, the lower ends of which pass between arms C Yand pawl O, and play on the same bolt with said pawl. A represents the leverwith which the machine is operated, and is pivoted between the connectingbars B B, near their top. S represents two arms, which at their outer ends are hooked to receive the anchor-chain P, and at their inner ends embrace the roller D. The levers A, it will be observed, work on bolts, which pass through nprights M and N. I
In operating my machine, the chain which is secured to roller D will be made to encircle the stump, the anchor-chain P will then be fastened to some stationary object, and the lever A alternately worked by human power. This alternate motion of the levers, and the consequent rotation of roller D by the combined action of the ratchet-wheel and pawl, will speedily perform the designed work.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arms G C, levers A A, connecting-bars B B, and pawls O 0,:1-ll being combined, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose specified.
2. The roller D, hooks G G, ratchet-wheels K K, pawls O O, and arms C C, when all are arranged and operated as and for the purposes described.
