To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST SIMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the fol-' lowing is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical, and efficient envelop, one in which the article inside cannot be extracted without destroying the envelop.
A further object of my invention is to provide an envelop with a mechanical seal which will prevent the opening of theenvelop unless the seal or envelop be destroyed.
Further objects will appear from an inspection of the drawings and the following description and claims.
The in vention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a safety-envelop provided with two of my mechanical seals. Fig. 2 is a plan view of an outer portion of the flap part of the seal cut out and ready to be bent or creased into its final form. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same after it has been partially bent or creased. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the inner or barbed lining of the flap portion of the seal detached. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the flap outer blank and barbed lining after they have been assembled together and attachcd to a flap of an envelop. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank of the inner portion of the envelop-seal. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the blank of the outer portion of the envelopseal detached ready to be bent or creased. Fig. 8 is a plan View of the two portions of the envelop-seal assembled together ready for attachment to the envelop. Fig. 9 is a plan View of the reverse side of the same. In making my improved mechanical seal for a safety-envelop I make it in two parts, one for the flap X of the envelop and one for the envelop proper, Y. I also employ in making these two parts two blanks for each part. In making the outer part of the portion of the seal intended to be applied to the flap I make a blank A, of tin or other suitable metal, with a portion A preferably tapered and rounded at the end, as shown. This blank is intended to be struck out by a die and to be provided with a tongue a and with tongues a, and, if desired, with tangs a This blank may be formed in one operation of the die. In making the inner part of the portion of the seal intended to be applied to the flap I make a blank B, also of tin or similar metal, and preferably strike it out with one blow or operation of the die. It is provided with barbed tongues Z), the barbs being on both or on only the inner sides of the tongues, as preferred, and with a hole I) and with slots o The inner and outer parts of the flap portion'of the seal are intended to be assembled or united together. In order to do this, the tongue a and the tongues a, and the tangs aiwhen such tangs are used, of the blank A are bent at right angles, which bending may be done, if deired, in the same operation that cuts them. The flap of the envelop is inserted between the two parts or blanks A and B and the tongue a inserted through it and just over the bridge 12 which bridge is cut or divided,
as will appear from Fig. 4 of the drawings, and the tongues a after passing through the fiap pass through the slots 19 of the blank B. The tongue a is then bent or folded flat over and upon the bridge b and the tongues a are bent or folded to one side and over upon the body of the blank B, and the tangs a when used, are bent or folded over the tongues 19 of the blank B near the bridge, all as shown in Fig. 5. This provides the flap portion of the envelop with its portion or half of the mechanical seal. Of course one, two, or any desired number of these flap portions of the seal may be attached to the flap and used as may suit the preference of the user or the exigencies of the case. I
In order to make that portion of the seal which is intended to be attached to the envelop proper, I make an inner blank 0, provided with slots 0 and an opening 0 and with tangs c at one end. I then make an outer blank D, preferably provided with tangs d and with flanges d and with an opening (:1
and with tongues d. All these parts may be struck out at one operation of the die used in cutting or forming the blanks, if desired, and the tangs cl and the flanges d bent at right angles, the latter on the diagonal lines at the ends of the hole 01 and the tongues (Z and the ear d bent at right angles to the blank. These bending operations may, if desired, be performed by the same die which cuts the blank. The two parts of the envelop portion of the seal are then put together or assembled. The'tangs d are bent or folded around and against the body of the blank 0 and-the flanges d inserted through the slots c and bent or folded against the body of the blank and the tongues 01 inserted through the opening 0 of the blank 0, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9. In order to fasten the envelop portion of the seal to the paper of the envelop, the tangs c are passed through the paper of the envelop and then bent or folded- In'order to seal and lock the envelop, the
barbed tongues 12, together with the adjacent tapered or round-ended portion A of the blank A, are inserted through the hole of the envelop and slid in under the ear (:1 This brings them between the inner and the outer parts of the envelop portion of the seal. As
they are slid farther in the portion A passes through the opening d and down on the outside of the blank D, while the barbed tongues pass on the outside of such blank and straddle the opening 0 of the blank 0 and the tongues (i inserted through such opening.
- The inclined form of the opening 0, which has its narrow or tapered end toward the flap portion of the seal," causes the barbed tongues b to'be sprung apart; but after they have been forced home or to their ultimate position, so that the barbs on the tongues 12 have passed the ends of the tongues d and the pressure which bent or sprung them apart is removed they spring in toward each other into their initial position, which brings their barbs beyond and behind the ends of the tongues (P, so that they cannot be removed. This will be understood from an examination and inspection of Fig. 11.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an envelop-seal, a blank A having an end A, and tongues a and a, substantially as described.
2. In an envelop-seal, a blank B having barbed tongues b, an opening 19, slots 19 and a two-part bridge b substantially as described.
3. In an envelop-seal, the combination of a blank A having an end A and tongues a and a, and a blank B having barbed tongues b, an opening b, slots 5 and a two-part bridge b the tongue at being folded over the bridge b and the tongues a being passed through any material interposed between the blanks and through the slots 12 and bent to one side,
when the parts are assembled, substantially as described.
4. In an envelop-seal, a blank 0 having slots 0, a taper opening 0, and tangs 0 substantially as described.
5. In an envelop-seal, a blank D having flan es d a slot d and ton ues d substantially as described.
6. In an envelop-seal, the combination of a blank 0 having slots 0, a taper opening a" and tangs c and a blank D having flanges d, a slot (1 and tongues 01 the flanges d being passed through the slots c and the'tongues 01 through the opening a, and being bent to one side, when the parts are assembled, substantially as described.
7. In an envelop-seal, the combination of a flap portion comprising an outer piece A having an end A and an inner piece Bhaving barbed tongues 17 and means for attaching the two parts together and to the envelopflap, and an envelop portion comprising an outer partD having an opening cl and tongues d and an inner part having a tapered opening 0 with its smaller or pointed end toward the flap portion and means for attaching the parts together and to the envelop, whereby, in assembling the two portions to seal an envelop, the end A of the flap portion passes through the opening d of the envelop portion and the barbed tongues I) pass along the sides of the opening 0 and the tongues 01 which spread them apart until their barbs pass the ends of the tongues when the inner barbs spring in behind the ends of the tongues and prevent the withdrawal of the flap portion from the envelop portion, substantially as described.
