THOMAS L. OGIER, OF WEST CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
l A Letters Patent N. 64,693, dated ilary 14, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT 1N BUCKLES.
"this Segnale narra in iutlgese tettets rtent mit making not uf tige smut.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. OGIER, of West Ghester, in the county of Chester, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new. and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ci' the same, reference being hadl to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in wllieh Figure l represents a top View ofthe buckle, with straps attached and held thereto.
Figure 2 represents an edge view of the same. i
Figure 3 represents a longitudinal` section through the buckle andstraps. l
Similar letters of reference where they oceur'in the separate :figures denote like parts iu all the drawings.
My invention consists more particularly in the form of the holding surfaces of the buckle, viz, on the movable bar or tongue, and the stationary bar or frame ei' the buckle, as will be hereafter explained.
The frame a ofthe buckle may be of the ordinary rectangular form, and the bar c of this frame, the one against which the strap cZ'is clamped, may be serrated or grooved, as shown in the' drawings, or otherwise roughened, so as te serve a purpose similar tothe Serrat-ions or grooves. And this bar c Iprefer to make movable like a roller, or the bar may be stationary, and have a serrated or grooved sleeve on it, against which the strap is clamped, as shown in the drawings, und which latter plan I prefer, though the others maybe used, the sleeve when used serving as a roller and a clamp beth. To this frame a ispivoted, as at c, what may be termed the tongue, portion j' of the buckle. The front'portion z' of this tongue is serrated, grooverl, or otherwise roughened, and whenv the strap d is passed between this portionz' and the grooved or roughened bar orroller c, and any strain put upon it, it is tightly and immevably' clamped. To theV after part, n, oi' the tongue the other strap g is fastened in any of the usual ways of uniting a strap to a buckle frame; but in this buckle it will be perceived that the stationary or permanent strap is fastened to the tongue, or what is the substitute for the tongue of an ordinary buckle. Or if it be one strap, with the buellc upon one of its ends, and the other to be caught between the serrated surfaces, the action would be the same. By this ccnstruetion of buckle no holes need he made in the strap', and the strap is always caught and held at the very point where no more strain can he, or is, put upon it, without slacking it, or overstraining it, as is sometimes done, to rcach'aholc that the tongue will enter. What I have termed a to`ng'ue,f, is really a frame of reetangular ferm, upon which the frame t is hinged, and controlled or held, particularly when the strain of'the strap is on them, the rear ofthe frame a then catching against the framef, as at o in the drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to. secure by Lett-ers Patent, is-
The combination ofthe two parts af, pivoted te each other, and furnished with the roughened surfaces c for catching and clamping a leather or other flexible strap, substantially as and for the purpose described. THOMAS L. oeinn.
