OFFICE-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,300, dated March 13, 1900. Application filed December 8,1899. Serial No. 739,638. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, CLINTONV. B. REEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jos, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Office-Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertains to improvements in oihce-indicators, more especially over the construction shown in patent issued to me October 10, 1899, which patent is numbered 634,628.
The invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of the parts, whereby the construction is simplified and the cost of manufacture reduced.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of an office-indicator constructed in accord with my invention, the face-plate being partially broken away to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 isaperspective view showing Ithe indicator swung upon its back. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken vertically through the front portion of the casing rear of the face-plate, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the means for setting the hands.
In the make-up'of the device a suitable casing Ais provided, which casing may be attached to a door or door-frame by screws a a, which pass through the back A', said back being secured to the casing A by hinges on one side and on the opposite side by a lock or equivalent fastening. Vhen the lock is out of engagement with the hasp, the whole casing may be swung upon the back A and access can be had to the interior, so that mailmatter which has beeninserted in the casing through the slot c2 may be removed. At a suitable distance rear of the glazedfront of the casing there is positioned a face-plate B, which has an opening b for the passage of the arbors of hands, and above the opening the faceplate is cut away to provide a sight-opening. The lower portion of the sight-opening is bent inward to form lugs b2, which overlie the ends of a roll for the purpose of retaining the roll on a line with the sight-opening. The horizontal ledge A2 of the casing has a slit or opening c, through which projects an extension c of a plate C, which plate has bent ends which extend inward and are apertured for the passage therethrough of a rod d, said rod being supported by the side pieces of the casing. The plate C in length is about equal to two-thirds of the width of the casing on its inside, so that one-half of the plate may be disposed opposite the centrally-positioned sight-opening. Each half of the plate may carry an inscription of the character shown, and a part of the inscription on the lower end of the plate is adapted to be read in conjunction with an inscription on the roll D, the shaft thereof having a knob which serves as a convenient means for turning the roll. The ends of the roll are engaged by the lugs b2, and said lugs prevent lateral movement of the shaft and serve as friction-stops for the roll by bearing upon the ends thereof. The lower edge of the plate C is positioned in front and slightly above the center of the roll D, and the lower edge of the sight-opening is a short distance below the center of the roll, which only allows one line of reading matteron the roll to be visible.
Below the sight-opening, upon the faceplate, soV as to be concentlic with the aperture b therethrough, is the representation of a clock-dial, and a pair of independently-movable hands or pointers are attached to arbors e e', the central arbor e being attached to a gear-wheel, which is supported so as to turn upon a supporting-frame E. The hollow arbor e is passed over the central arbor and carries a pinion which is of less diameter than the pinion on the revoluble arbor e. The frame E is attached to the center of the partition, and said frame has its ends outturned and apertured to provide bearings for shafts ff', which carry pinions or spur-wheels, the shafts being of sufficient length to extend through the side pieces of the casing, where they are provided with knobs for turning the shafts, and thus setting the hands.
The device hereinbefore described may be cheaply manufactured, and the face-plate may have, through the dial and partition, sight-openings, through which the contentsl of the letter-box may be viewed, and behind IOO one or more of the openings may be placed slides carrying suitable inscriptions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an office-indicator, the combination with a easing having a slit therethrough, of a horizontally-movable slide having a portion which projects through the slit beyond the easing, a face-plate having a sight-aperture, an inscription-carrying roll mounted on a horizontally-supported shaft so as to be positioned rear of the sight-opening, the horizontally-movable plate and lower Wall of the sightopening partially covering the roll, substantially as shown.
2. In an oiiiee-indicator, the combination of a easing having a sight-opening, a plate niovably supported rear of said sight-opening, a roll rear of the sight-opening and movable plate a dial on the face-plate and means for actuating hands or pointers which are movable over the dial, substantially as shown.
3. The combination in an office-indicator, of a easing having an opening, a horizontallymovable slide having a portion which projects through the opening, a face-plate having a sight-opening, a roll or cylinder maintained so that its center will be below the lower edge of the slide and above the lower edge ofl the sight-opening, a dial on the face-plate and independently movable hands connected to gearing which is operated from opposite sides of the casing, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CLINTON V. ILREEDER.
