KNOWN ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That I, ISAAC D. MATHEWS, of the city and county of Worcester, und Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have n'mde certain new and useful Improvements in Combined iIaingers and Journal-Boxes or `Bearings for Shnt'ting; und I do hereby declare that the followinfzr` is a full, clenr, und exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which- Figurc I represents a. perspective view of my improved combined hanger and journal-box.
Figure 2 represents a. perspective view of the journal-box or bearing C; and
Figure 3 represents a longitudinal central section of the combined hunger and journal-box, as shown in fig. I.
In the drawings the part marked A represents the body or moin pnrt of thehunger. Bthe top, which hns two slots or openings, aa, through which bolts pass to fasten the hanger to the ceiling-benin or pluto of the building. From one side of the part A projects :t piece, b, through which passes a. screw, c, the point of the latter entering the concuvity in the cnp l which has n projection, e, on its underside to fit in the slotf, in onchnlf of the journnl-box or bearing C. A slot,g, is mede in the pnrt A through which passes n bolt, D, by which the part E, upon which the journal-box C rests, is secured to purt A, From the under or lower pnrt of A projects the port F, through which posses the sustainingscrew G, the lutter having a. nut, 7L, on its lower end to support the oil or drip-cup H. The journal-box supporting piece Eis mede in circuler form upon the upper side to receive the circular port 171 of the journal-box C. It hns also n small projection, n, which enters the slotf, in the box C, as fully shown in fig. 3. O O nre holes, through which oil or other lubricztting substunce is applied to the bearing or jonrnnl of shaft I. It will be noticed thnt the ends of the journal-box C cnn more or swingr in all directions, thus enabling the shnt't to run ensily und without binding in the box or springing the hangers. Then nga-in the provision for adjusting the position of the box is'very complete. By moans ot' the slots La the entire honger and box can be adjusted in the usual manner, while the box C can be adjusted up or dwn without disturbing the main pnrt A; to eifect which the screw-bolt D is loosened and the screw-spindlo G, which has .n lat hend, j), to receive a wrench, is turned up er down to lower or eleva-te the bearing part E, to bring the boxf C to the desired position, when bolt D is tightened up agri-in. By the use of e nut, h, the adjusting screw-spindle is Inn-'le to answer :t twofold purpose, viz, that oi' adjusting the bearing part E, and also ns n support to the oil or drip-pun H. Both pnrts of the box C are ninde alike so thntin cese the lower halt' becomes' worn, or for n-ny other purpose it becomes desirable, the box C cnn be used the other side When in use the points n and c keep the box C from becoming displaced, while et the sume time allowing the box to twist in its socket formed in the piece E sufficiently to permit thebox C to conform freely to the position of the shutting as it revolves as above stated. By the use of' the screw c, in the projection 6, in combination with the cap piece d, the box is retained in position, and thnt, too, without preventing the free motions of the box as above described.
Having described my improved combined honger and journal-box, what I claim therein newand of' my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Potent, is
1. The combination of the mein part A,hnving a. slot, g, projections 6F, screw-bolts D, G, end e, with the bearing-piece E, :rnd box C, said parts beingl constructed und arranged for joint operation, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of screw e und czt'p ci with the journal-box C, :md projectionl b, of the hanger part A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. A
3. The combination, with the concuved bearing part E, and cap lia-ving projections n and e as shown, of the journal-box C, having slots or recesses ff for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of nut 71. and screw G with the projection Rund oil `or drip-pan H, substantially as set forth.
