FREDERICK ARTHUR PYKE, OF BOLTON, ENGLAND.
DEVICE FOR CLEANING TOBACCO-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 642,489, dated January 30, 1900.
A li tion fil d March 31, 1899. Serial No. 711,233. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ARTHUR PYKE, of Abbey Grove, Bolton, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Cleaning Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved device for use in connection with tobacco-pipes, whereby the cleaning of such pipes or the removal from them of the accumulation of objectionable liquid and other matter may be easily and expeditiously performed. T0 attain this object, I make use of parts constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawing, in which the figure represents a sectional view showing the application of myimproved device to a tobacco-pipe as when in use for cleaning the same, the outer end of the pipe-stem and the outer end of the air-pump barrel being broken away.
In carrying my invention into effect I make use of a plug or support a, of india-rubber or other suitable substance, preferably of conical formation, so as to be adapted to fit tightly within the bowls b of several different sizes of pipes c and having formed through it a passage or opening a of such a shape (as by being slightly recessed at ta as will allow the insertion therein of the nipple d of an airpump d. Thus it will be seen that when the parts are in position, as shown, air may be forced through the bowl and stem of the pipe 0 to carry with it the undesirable matter and so remove it therefrom as desired.
The air-pipe,which carries the nipple d, has fitted to slide thereon one end of an arm 9, a spring It being located between the sliding part of said arm and an enlargement h on said pipe, and said pipe is preferably provided with an annular-flange f and a leather or other Washer f in order to keep the several parts air-tight.
The tobacco-pipe c and plug a are held in position by the arm g, having a suitablyformed part 9 for laying hold of the pipe 0 and held in contact with said pipe by the spring it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-;-
A device of the character described consisting of an elastic plug or stopper adapted to fit the bowl of a tobacco-pipe and having an opening through it, an air pipe connected with said plug and formed for the passage of air from an air-pump, the arm 9 fitted to slide on said pipe and having an end g adapted to engage the exterior of the bottom of the bowl, and a spring for causing said arm g to yieldingly hold the pipe with the plug in the mouth of the bowl thereof.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK ARTHUR PYKE.
