LABEL-HOLDER FOR BOTTLES OR PACKAGES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,350, dated December 19, 1899.

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders for Bottles or Packages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

The present invention relates to a certain new and useful device for securing labels to bottles or similar articles; and the same consists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction, as will be hereinafter fully set forth in the drawings and described and pointed out in the specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a label holder or fastener which may be readily secured to the neck or body of a bottle or package and by means of which the label indicative of the contents of the package may be securely held in place and protected from injury during the handling of the bottle or cleaning thereof.

In order to comprehend the invention, reference must be had to the accompanying sheets of drawings, forming a part of this application, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view of a bottle, partly broken away, showing the label-holder applied to the neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a side view partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the label-holder, and Fig. 4 is a View illustrating the holder applied to an ordinary drug-bottle.

In carrying out my invention I first construct a holder A in the form of a continuous band, composed of such material as will readily conform to the surface or shape of the package over which it is forced. Preferably the holder is made of transparent or semitransparent material, so that the label, which is located thereunder, may be clearly exposed to view. In the present case the holder A is provided on its under face with a stamped or pressed socket or label-recess to, within which is fitted the label A prior to placing the hold er over the bottle or package. This socket or recess a, while serving to maintain the label in proper position, also gives an embossed appearance to the face of the holder, thus enhancing the looks of the bottle or package and making it appear as though the label was in relief.

Preferably the holder is formed of thin celluloid, although any other material may be made use of possessing sufficient pliability to give to the surface over which it is fitted, and adhesion to firmly maintain its position.

In Figs. 1 and 2 the holder is illustrated as being applied to the neck B of the bottle B, which is the position desired for liquor-holding bottles, while in Fig. 4 the same is shown as being secured to the body C of an ordinary drug-bottle. It will be readily understood that it is only necessary to increase the size of the holder to adapt the same to bottles of varying diameter.

Practice has demonstrated that the holder will maintain its posit-ion by adhesion after being properly placed upon the bottle. However, should it prove otherwise it will only be necessary to apply a small amount of cement in order to unite the same firmly to the bottle.

Inasmuch as the label is located beneath the holder, the same is protected against injury resulting thereto during the handling, washing, or cleaning of the bottle.

\Vhere the holder is applied to drug-bottles or to the body of the package, I prefer to slightly taper or incline the walls thereof, as shown in Fig. 4, and to likewise incline or taper the holder in order that the same may fit snugly thereon without buckling.

In applying the holder the label is first fitted therein and the holder then slipped or forced over the bottle or package until it comes to a rest. A firm pressure should then be appliedin order to force the holder firmly to its seat. Owing to the thinness of the material out of which the holder is made-say about one twenty-fourth of an inch fl only that portion covering the label will stand out, the remaining or body portion appearing as a part of the bottle or package, and more especially so if so colored as to harmonize with the color thereof.

By the use of the present invention I am enabled to dispense with the use of enamel labels now used, thus creating the saving of considerable expense. 1

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is-

1. As a new article of manufacture, aselfretaining label-holder for bottles and the like, adapted to embrace a part of the bottle and having a transparent or semitransparent portion adapted to overlie and protect a label, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a selfretaining label-holdert'orbottles and the like, comprising a ring or cincture adapted to encircle and embrace a part of the bottle, and having a transparent portion adapted to overlie and protect a label, substantially as de scribed.
