UNITED STATES ATENT EEICE.
WILLIAM M. IWIAYNADIER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BOX FOR PHONOGRAPH-RECORDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,734, dated December 12, 1899.
Application filed September 2l, 1897. Serial No. 652,434- (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. MAYNI DIER, of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Boxes for Phonograph-Records, of which the following is a specification.
The said invention consists in a peculiar construction of the box whereby the record is brought centrally thereof before its lower end enters the box proper, thereby preventing under all circumstances Contact of the exterior surface of the record with the surrounding surface of the box, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the further description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is an exterior side view of the iinproved box with thelid thereon and secured. Fig. 2 is a top View of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 3 on the dotted line 'x oc. Fig. 5 is a view of the box without its lid, on a reduced scale, illustrating the method of inserting the record in the box or removing it from the same.
Referring now to the drawings, A is the body of the box, cylindrical in shape and made, preferably, of strawboard.
To the bottom B of the box is secured a frusto-conical core C, over which the phonograph-record D is placed. The core O extends to a point considerably above the top edge of the box, so that the record is centered before its lower end enters the box. The outer surface of the record, therefore, cannot be injured by contact with the inner surface of the box, and no lining to the box is required.
The upper end 'of the record when in place is preferably even with the top edge of the box, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lid E is provided with an annular projection F, which fits around the upper end of the core O and bears on the record to keep it down on the bottom, which is, by preference, provided with an annular recess d, in which the record is seated.
The lid E is held tightly in place by a rubber band G, and to prevent the band from becoming displaced the lid andthe bottom at points diametrically opposite each other are indented for the reception of the rubber band. The indentions are denoted by o.
As the record is placed in and removed from the box by means of two fingers which are spread or extended in it, I provide the upper end of the core with openings @which allow the ngers to pass into the core and come in contact with the record. Without these openings in the wall of the core it would be practically impossible to lift the record, as the lingers co-uld not be brought into Contact with its inner surface.
I claim as my invention- A box to hold a phonograph-record, of a depth which corresponds with the length of the record, having therein a central recordholding core with finger-openings therein, substantially as described, which core is secured to the bottom of the box and extends beyond the upper edge of the same, combined with a lid adapted to be slid over the box, having an annular projection which ts around the central core and rests on the upper end of the record when the lid is in place, substantially as specified.
VILLIAM M. MAYNADIER.
