SASH- -FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,492, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed February 2, 1899. Serial No. 704,244. No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LALLAN AUGUSTUS BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a sash-lock, and has for its object to provide a suitable lock for sashes which will be reliable in action and simple in construction and by which the sash may be locked in any desired position and in such position as will prevent entrance of a person through the open window.
The invention consists of a sash-lock constructed substantially as hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views and in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of a sash provided with my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the sash-lock detached from the sash. Fig. 4. is an interior View thereof, the top plate being removed. Fig. 5 is an under view of said top plate. Fig. 6 is a central transverse section of Fig. 3. Fig.7 is a section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a sash-frame of any ordinary or preferred construction, in which are arranged the ordinary upper and lower sashes A and A Upon one side of the upper sash is arranged a rack comprising a longitudinal plate 0, in which is formed a plurality of openings C, the lower edges of which are beveled and the upper edges of which are adapted to form a shoul-' der or abutment, as usual in such construction. Upon the upper edge of the lower sash is arranged a lock B, which is preferably in the form of a hollow casing substantially rectangular in form and is provided with a removable top plate 13.
The casing B is provided in its front face with a centrally-arranged opening for the passage of the usual catch 29, and upon the opposite face of the casing is arranged an opening 17 through which the shank b of the catch is adapted to slide. A suitable helical spring b is sleeved upon the shank of said catch and impinges at one end' against the side of the casing and at the other end against a suitable shoulder.
In the top of the catch 1) is arranged a longitudinal slot 19 In the rear face of the casing are arranged two step devices D, located one on either side of the central opening b. The stop devices D are provided with a suitable knob (1 upon the outer side of the casing, whereby they may be rotated upon their bearings. A stop-lu g d is arranged upon said stop devices D and is located inside the said box or casing and upon one side of which is'formed a groove d The cover B is adapted to be removably secured to the case B and is provided with a slot b arranged in the center thereof. Upon the under side of said cover is arranged an operating-plate B which is provided with an upwardly-projecting lug arranged to slide in the slot 19 and provided upon its upper end with a knob or handle b by means of which the operating-plate may be operated. The
operating-plate B is substantially T-shaped in form and is provided upon its central projection b with a depending lug 19 which is adapted to enter the slot b in the upper face of the catch 1), whereby said catch may be withdrawn from the socket 0. Upon each of the transverse portions 13 of the operatingplate 19 is arranged a downwardly-projecting stop-lug 19 which is adapted to slide freely in the groove 01 of the stop device D when the parts are in their normal or operative position.
When the parts are in their normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, the catch 17 is always forced outwardly by the spring Z7 into engagement with the slot 0 of the rack C. 'When it is desired to unlock the sash, itis onlynecessary to retract the catch 17 by operating the knob or handle 5 of the operating-plate. \Vhen it is desired to permanently secure the look, as upon retiring for the night, allowing the window to be open from two to six inches or as far as desired, it isouly necessary after the window has been secured to turn one or IOO both ofthe stop devices D, so that the groove 01 is no longer in position to be engaged by the lugs 19 When in this position, any attempt to manipulate the lock for the purpose of opening the same will be frustrated by reason of the stop-lugs b abutting against the ends d of the stop devices D.
It is obvious that many of the details of construction illustrated in the drawings and described above can be changed or omitted without limiting the scope of my invention. For example, only one stop device may be employed; noris the precise arrangement of the sliding catch 17, with its shank 1) extending through the opening of the case, absolutely necessary, as any other convenient arrangement for these parts may be substituted therefor.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sash-lock, consisting of a casing, a spring-actuated catch arranged therein and provided upon its upper face with a slot, a sliding operating-plate adapted to operate in connection with said slot, and a rotating stop device adapted to engage said lock-plate, substantially as shown and described.
2. A sash-lock, consisting of a casing, a
spring-actuated catch arranged therein, and provided upon its upper face with a slot, a sliding operating-plate having a depending lug adapted to engage said slot, a stop-lug arranged upon said sliding lock-plate, a rotatable stop device having a lug adapted to engage said stop-lug and provided with a groove within which the stop-lug is adapted to slide, substantially as described.
3. A sash-lock, consisting of a casing, a spring-actuated catch arranged therein and provided upon its upper face with a slot, a sliding operating-plate having a depending lug adapted to engage said slot, stop-lugs arranged upon said operating-plate, rotatable stop devices sleeved in said casing, a lug arranged upon each of said stop devices and located within the casing and adapted to engage said stop-lugs and provided with a groove within which the stop-lugs are adapted to slide, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of thesubscribing witnesses, this 30th day of January, 1899. v
ALLAN AUGUSTUS BARR.
