Description

RS PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHH. WASHINGTON D C AT A nttrh tetta attent fitte.
WILLIAM A. LEWIS, OFA SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR T() HIMSELF, H. H. MASON, AND JOSEPH MESSINGER, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 63,731, dated April. 9, 1867.
IMPEOVED MOP-HEAD.
fr TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Lewis, of Springfield, in the county of Windsor, and State of Vermont, t have invented a new and improved Mop-IIead;-and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and i exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, termin` part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved mop-head of that class in which'the movable jaw is operated by a screw. The object of the present invention is to expedite the movement of said jaw,4or give it a more rapid motion than hitherto; and to this end my invention consists in the application of the screws, one ixed on the end of the mop-handle, and the other, being a tubular one, 'provided with an internal thread, to work on tho xed screw, and also `provided with an external thread, on which a nut connected with the movable jaw works, ull being constructed and arranged to operate as hereinafter fully shown and described,
The accompanying drawing represents a side view of my invention. l
A is a portion of a wooden handle, having a metal tubular screwB, itted permanently on its end, and C i is a tubular rotary metal screw, having an internal thread to work on the screw B, and also having two proi jecting thumb-pieces ct a, for the convenience of turning it. The screw C is also provided with an external screw-thread, Zw, on which a nut, D, is fitted; and to this nut the inner part of the movable jaw E of the mophead is secured. This movable jaw may be oi' cast or wrought iron, of equivalent form, and provided with rounded corners, as shown clearly in the drawing. F ie the xcd jaw, which may be cast or formed with the Iked screw B, and having a groove or recess in it's outer surfaceto receive the outer side c of the movable jaw E. The two jaws E F are, or may be, constructed in the usual way, and therefore de not require .f1y special description: t
It will be seen from the above description that, by turning the screw C, the movable jaw E will be moved rapidly, as the movement ofthe screw C, on the fixed screw B, is combined with the movement of the nut D, en the screw C, in actuating said jaw; hence,`the` mop-cloth may be adjusted between the jaws and removed therefrom with thc greatest facility.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The operating thumb-nut C, provided with external and internal screw-threads, in combination with the fixed screw B lon the handle, and the sliding `jaw F, substantially osv and for the purpose described.
