NUT-CRACKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 634,518, dated October 10, 1899.
pplieation filed January 3, 1 899 To all whom it moby concern: j
Beit known that I, ALBERT BAUMGARTEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport,in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Crackers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in nut-crackers, the object of which is, rst, to so arrange the jaws with reference to each other that the widest opening between them shall be at the point of greatest strength and the narrowest opening at the most convenient point for the insertion of small nuts; second, to so support the jaws that the entire device may be freely moved about, and also so that a dish may be placed immediatelybeneath the jaws to receive the nuts after they' are cracked, and, third, to so pivot the movable jaw that it may readily separate from the xed jaw in the support in order that the whole device may be more conveniently kept clean and more compactly arranged for shipment.
To such end the invention consists in cerwhich will be fully denot essential tothe invention, but which are either necessary or preferable in a complete and operative device of this sort.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of a perspective in Figure l, a side elevation, partly in section, in Fig. 2, and a plan of the fixed jaw and support, partly broken away, in Fig. 3.
The support is shown as consisting of a bed or table A, supported upon four legs a and provided at one side with a laterally-extending jaw a', at the other side with an upwardlyextending socket o?, and between the' two with an arc-shaped opening as, bridged by two cross-pieces a4. Upon this tableis pivoted the movable jaw B, provided with an operating-handle b, a laterally-extending gudgeon b', adapted to enter the socket c?, and downwardly-extending teeth b2, adapted to enter the arc-shaped opening a3 and engage with the bridges across the latter to form a sort of segment-and-rack connection adapted to ad- Serial No. 700,888. (No model.)
proper relation to the iixed jaw. The downwardly-projecting lug b3 strikes the table to limit the downward movement of the handle. It should be noticed that the widest opening between the jaws is at their inner portions and the narrowest at their points, the object of which is to permit the largest nuts to be cracked nearest to the inner and stronger ends of the jaws and to the operating parts therefor and to enable the smallest nuts to be cracked at the points ofthe jaws, where they can be most conveniently held by the fingers.
The movable jaw is readily lifted from the support and the fixed jaw for packing or for cleaning, the teeth t? being iirst raised from the opening a3 and the gudgeon b' then withdrawn from the socket a2.
-Figs 1 and 2 illustrate the advantage of supporting the cracker upon the legs a, which is that a suitable dish may be shoved under the jaws and the cracked nuts dropped directly int-o said dish. j
' I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination with a sui-table support and-a fixed jaw extending laterally therefrom, of a pivoted jaw comprising a handle and jaw proper extending laterally from the handle portion alongside of the fixed jaw, the opening between the two jaws being greatest at the base or inner portions of the jaws and least at their points; substantially as described.
2. In a nut-cracker horizontal supporting-table provided with a suitable socket, aseries of gear-teeth and a fixed jaw extending laterally from the table on the side of the gear-teeth opposite the socket, the vcombination with said table of a having a substantiallymovable jaw provided with an operating-han- 90,/
the action of the gears; substantially as described. f
3. In a nut-cracker, the combinationA with a table, A, provided with the socket, a2, the
arc-shaped openin gs, 0,3, containing a series of roo transverse bridgesI and the laterally-extending fixed jaw, CL2, of the movable jaw, B, having the handle, the projecting gudgeon, Z2
Vand the teeth, b2, the gudgeon being adapted to be readily inserted in the socket and the teeth to drop into the opening, a3 and engage with the bridges; substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I havehereunto set my hand, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of'lll'inois, this 28th day of December, Io A. D. 1898.
ALBERT BAUMGARTEN. Vitnesses:
LOUIS STROHACKER, CHAS. O. SHERVEY.
