Description

NIT-ED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
EDIVARD OTT, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE LORAIN STEEL COMPANY, OF PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILWAY-TRACK STRUCTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,728, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed July 22, 1899. Serial No. 724,856. (No model.)
To all whom it m y n r locking engagement between the parts, as Be it known that I, EDWARD OTT, of Johnswill be readily seen. I usually'provide the town, in the county of Oambria and State of wall a at intervals with projections a for Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usethe purpose of providing for the proper fit of 5 ful Improvement in Railway-Track Structhe wear-plate, as these projections may be tures, of which the following is a full, clear, ground or cut away to suitvariations in the and exact description, reference being had to plates. The section Fig. 2 is taken through the accompanying drawings, which form a one of these projections, the true line of the part of this specification. wall a, being indicated by the dotted line. I to This invention relates to railway track also prefer to provide the bottom of the recess work and more particularly to slot-rail-crossat the base of the wall a with a longitudinal ing structures of that class wherein are emdepression or channel a the extension 13 ployed removable hardened wear or center having a corresponding rib or swell I), this plates. provision being for the purpose of increasing I 5 The object of the invention is to provide the engaging or gripping area of the parts. means of novel character in a structure of The opposite wall a of the recess is formed this class for securing in place against vertiwith an overhanging lip a recessed at a to cal and lateral displacement the removable provide ways for the insertion of keys 0, but wear-plates. Inasmuch as the seats for said one of which is shown. These keys are in- 20 plates in structures of this kind are open or serted in said ways and are driven endwise partially open at one side, where the wearunderneath thesaid lip and between the same plate comes to alinement with and forms a and a rib 1), formed on the plate B. part of the slot-rail face of the structure, D indicates spelter or like material, which which alinement must be insured, it is deis poured underneath and around the plateB 2 5 sirable to provide means of simple and pracand keys 0 in the usual manner and which tical character whereby said plate may be can be readily cut away to permit the keys to securely gripped and secured at its base porbe withdrawn when it is desired to remove tion. I accomplish this result by the means the plate. now to be described, and hereinafter pointed E indicates blocks upon which the weargo out in the appended claims, reference being plates are usually seated.
had to the accompanying drawings,in which- The construction described, it will be read- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a track or ily seen, provides a simple, convenient, and crossing structure embodying the invention, secure means for holding the wear-plate to its and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof on seat, while at the same time permitting it to 5 the line X X of Fig. 1. be removed when required.
In the drawings the letter A designates a The structure A, with its provisions for slot-rail member or castingshown as of general seating and securing the said plate, may be L shape in cross-section, with a broad lateral readily cast in a single piece, although obviextension or'fiange a, pocketed or recessed in ously the invention might be applied to a 0 40 its upper face to form a seat for the wearstructure otherwise formed.
plate B. This recess at its upper portion I do not wish to limit myself to the details extends through to the slot-rail face of the of construction and arrangement whichIhave casting; but in the shelf or extension a it is herein shown and described, as it is obvious deepened to seat a bottom extension B of the that the same may be varied without depart- 5 45 said plate. The inner wall ct of the deepened ing from the spirit and scope of my inven= portion of this recess is'under cut or undertion. The invention may also be used to adbeveled, as indicated, and the contiguous face vantage in connection with various kinds of of the extension B has a corresponding intrackwork. oline orbevel, so that when said plate is Having thus described my invention, what I00 50 seated and forced laterally toward the said I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patwall there is obtained a secure gripping or cut, is
1. The combination with a track or crossing member, recessed to seat a removable wearplate, of a wear-plate seated in said recess and engaging a wall thereof both laterally and vertically, and means for maintaining said engagement.
2. The combination with a track or crossing member, provided with a recess or pocket in its upper face, of a wear-plate seated therein and engaging a wall thereof both laterally and vertically, and keys or wedges between the said plate and the opposite wall of said recess.
3. The combination with a track or crossing member, provided with a pocket or recess having an underbeveled wall, of a wear-plate seated in said pocket or recess and having a correspondingly-beveled face and means for securing the engagement of said wall and face.
4. The combination with a track or crossing member, provided with a pocket or recess having an underbeveled wall, of a wear-plate seated in said pocket or recess and having a correspondinglybeveled portion engaging said wall and wedges or keys inserted between the opposite side of said pocket or recess and the adjacent wall of the latter.
5. The combination with a track or crossing member having a pocket therein formed with an underbeveled wall at one side and with an overhanging lip at the opposite side, of a removable wear-plate seated in said pocket and having a beveled portion engaging the said wall and at the opposite side a rib or projection, and locking devices engaging said overhanging lip and the rib or projection, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a track or crossing member having a pocket therein formed at one side with an underbeveled wall, and with a groove or channel at the base of said wall, of a wear-plate seated in said pocket and en-' gaging the said wall, and having a rib or swell which enters the said groove or channel.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD OTT.
